Department Of Translation
I'm Prof. Dr. Işın Bengü Öner. I'm the president of the Translation Science Department at İstanbul 29 Mayis University. Regarding our programs, we have 2 bachelor of science , 1 master of science and 1 doctorate. Today, the interests and needs are increasing for communication experts who are multilingual and multicultural. Communication networks are multiplying on intergovernmental, intercompany, interpersonal and interagency basis. In an environment like this, naturally, technology is a necessity. Generally, technology can be used in situations like these but sometimes it can’t. Of course translators can often be diverse with their works and tasks in this environment.
Our department was established to provide insight to these interests and needs with the aid of programs like bachelor of science, master of science and doctorate at 29 Mayis University. During the Bachelor of Science program, education is given with 2 language options; Arabic and English. There are lots of modules in the substructure of our program. Of course at first, there is a language and culture module. With the language and culture module we try to develop the native language which is Turkish. The students at the department of English Translation Sciences choose Arabic and German language and in all the 4 years they receive their education with the language they have chosen. By doing this, they have enough expertise to do translations in one more language apart from English.
At the department of Arabic Translation Science , the students get English education. But if they join our department with a good knowledge of English, they can choose German, tooand are able to get the expertise to do translations in German as well.
Apart from the language and culture module, we offer political sciences , history, philosophy , turkish language and literature and economy lessons to our students from a different module that we call intellectual substructure. These lessons are very helpful to create the substructure of students.
Also our students take direct practical translation lessons which are a group of lessons focused completely in written translation, to develop their own translation skills. We have a technological module to develop the technological capability of students. In all the 4 years, students take many technological lessons and by keeping them aware of growing innovation, they continue their works in and out of laboratories.
We have “Ability to develop text” and ability to develop research” lessons. We have theoretical modules for students who want to obtain masters and doctorate degrees.
In this module, research is done on sources that we call historical translation studies, research on theories and commodity translation sciences. With these studies a path opens for the students who want to be researchers.
Our Bachelor of Science program is open to double major and minor in accordance with the general approach at the university, also other students from different departments can take education as a double major or minor. Likewise, we advise our department's students to receive a double major or minor from other departments too. They should complete their fields of expertise required for translation with a double major or minor. I can summarize the translation program shortly like this; there are many job opportunities for the graduates of our department. After graduation people who are committed to this field and aware of what is happening in the world can find an opportunity to work in international institutions and translation companies both in Turkey and abroad. You can find more information about the department of translation science in our website.
