Architecture
Hello, my name is Associate Professor Esen Gokce Özdamar. I am one of the founding faculty members of the Department of Architecture at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University and I am also the current head of the department. After receiving approval from the Council of Higher Education(YÖK) in 2013, our Department of Architecture at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University started to receive its first students in the fall 2014-2015 academic semester. I'd like to mention that we're a seven-year old department, and a very young and dynamic department. In addition, our academic staff is also very young and dynamic, especially the faculty members who graduated from the reputable and well-established architecture schools in Turkey, as well as our experienced architects who continue their architectural practices in the sector, are among our team. We are continuing our efforts to increase our staff in a rapidly. In the Department of Architecture, we provide theoretical courses whilst implementing an interdisciplinary approach of architecture. We have advanced level courses such as architectural expression techniques, structure courses, architectural design, basic design courses, application projects, diploma projects where the anatomy of architecture is taught. In addition, we have courses such as structure, structure knowledge, building materials, conveyor systems, restoration and architectural history, philosophy, sociology, where the “biology” of architecture is taught and discussed, but also occupational safety and YÖK basic courses are of course available in our program. We also have many elective courses related to architecture, art, social sciences and technical sciences that students can take in the architecture program according to their interests. I would like to say that some of these courses require a prerequisite, so you may have to take a course first to carry on, an example being the architectural design course. In the Department of Architecture, we mainly conduct studio courses, and these courses are carried out in classes where drawing, design and application practices can be done, as well as a number of model applications. In addition, we have computer laboratories where various computer programs are installed, and we carry out the courses there as well. In addition, there are laboratories from other departments that we use in our courses like the building materials and carrier systems courses. In addition, we have a designer workshop in our university, and in this workshop, students are taught about 3D printers and programs like Arduino. In addition, they create their own innovative designs by participating in various trainings and which could implement robotic coding programs.
We have 3 basic internships that architecture students are obliged to do. One of these internships is the architectural office or office internship, another internship is a construction site internship - an internship in the field - and our 3rd internship can be carried out in an architectural office, office construction site or alternatively, archaeological excavation sites, restoration areas. Alternatively, students can work at the Chamber of Architects, planning offices. In addition, students have the opportunity to benefit from Erasmus internships abroad. The graduation project, referred to as the diploma project, can be undertaken provided that the prerequisite architectural design courses and applied projects have been completed. This is a project that the student conducts independently from the faculty members, presented to the jury four times during the term. The student gains the right to graduate after defending his/her project in jury sessions and successfully completing his/her project and obtaining 240 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System). At the same time, within the scope of Erasmus, our students can receive education from 3 different institutions, especially in Italy and Greece. In addition, it is a program that faculty members can participate in -- Croatia is included in our program, too. In addition, in the Mevlana Program, students have the opportunity to conduct research and study abroad. In 2019, we held the 15th DOCOMOMO Conference (Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement), for the protection of modern architecture in Turkey. We participate in many national and international architectural design competitions together with our students and faculty members, we also participate in organizations of various architectural platforms of the European Union. Students can primarily maintain their architectural practices both individually and collectively. In addition, they can work in architectural offices, construction sites, application areas, work in planning offices, local governments, or develop themselves and become academic researchers. They can continue their academic activities both in Turkey and abroad. My biggest recommendation to the candidates and students who will choose the architecture department is to research the potentials of architecture discipline both abroad and in Turkey in their own time, and choose it freely. It will be beneficial to develop their own awareness so that they adopt architecture as a way of life rather than as a profession, but also to discover their own approach and make decisions in this way. Therefore, I can say that architecture is a discipline that can provide interdisciplinary and cultural cooperation of students, but also enable their multifaceted development. In addition to the sporting and cultural activities provided by our university, there are many activities that students can engage in on our campus, students can do this through student clubs as well or start their own initiatives to contribute to the field of architecture. In addition, our university is in the coastal area and therefore they can participate in a number of recreational activities (sports and other social activities). I advise students and candidats who will choose Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Faculty of Fine Arts Design and Architecture, Architecture Department to come here with a passion and desire for this profession. We'd love to have you all with us.
