Hello, I’m Professor Doctor Mustafa Gok, the director of the Institute of Science at Cukurova
University. I would like to give you some information about our Institute. This Faculty was created in 1982 as part of three separate faculties (the Institute of Science, the Institute of Health Sciences, and the Institute of Social Sciences) established to provide graduate and post graduate studies to our students. Currently, like many universities in this country, our three Institutes continue to provide education at the post graduate level for our students. In the Institute of Science there are over 35 departments available in faculties that were created in interdisciplinary collaboration such as Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Architecture, and Aquaculture and Agriculture. All of these branches offer Master’s programs, and 28 of them offer doctorate programs. So, together with our non-thesis programs, we have 65 post graduate opportunities available. We have over 370 students in these programs at the moment. Our Work Health and Safety department, with thesis and without, has also been included in this number. Our Institute works with the Erasmus Exchange program in over 20 different countries like Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Holland, England, Ireland, Spain, Norway, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, and Greece. We are also involved in the Mevlana Exchange program in different countries including Azerbaijan, North Korea, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand and the Ukraine. In addition to these programs, we also do internal exchange programs with Turkish universities through the Farabi Exchange program. In the last five years, we have had over 236 students go abroad with the Erasmus program to further their educations. Presently we have 1937 master’s students, and 991 doctoral students for a total of 2928 students – of these, 143 are foreign students who have chosen to come to our university for their post graduate studies. These foreign students come to us from countries like the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, Somali, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, China, Indonesia, Nigeria, Sudan, Yemen, the United States, Bangladesh, Burundi, Kosovo, Egypt, Mauritania, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, Jordan, and Zimbabwe.
Since our Institute was established in 1982 up to June of 2014, we have given 6884 Master’s
Degrees and 1515 PhDs. If we include our June 2014 graduates, those numbers go up to 7186
Master’s Degrees and 1630 PhDs. So we can say that, up to today, our institute has provided over
8816 post graduate graduates into the public and private work sectors.
The branches that we have in our Institute area as follows: Archeometry, Horticulture, Computer Engineering, Plant Conservation, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, Electric-Electronic Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Physics, Food Engineering, Construction Engineering, Statistics, Workplace Health and Safety, Geological Engineering, Chemistry, Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Architecture, Engineering and Technology Management, Auto Engineering, Landscape Engineering, Aquaculture Catching and Processing Technology, Basic Aquaculture, Aquaculture, Agricultural Economy, Agricultural Machine and Technology Engineering, Agricultural Structures and Irrigation, Field Crops, Textiles Engineering, Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems, and Zoology. Of these departments, archeometry, biotechnology, workplace health and safety, engineering and technology management, and remote sensing and GIS are all multidisciplinary studies. Also, of the 35 branches that I have mentioned, 4 Masters and PhD programs are given in English. In the name of working together, we also have four programs available in collaboration with regional universities including Adana Science and Technology, Osmaniye Korkut Ata, and Mersin University. Our goal here at the Institute of Science at Cukurova University is to increase the number of graduate students in Turkey from 15% to 30% by 2023. We believe that we have the strength to do this here at Cukurova University. Our determination and effort, as well as the educational fertility of Cukurova University will aid us in reaching this goal. In the coming years, we are also planning to open new multi-disciplinary post graduate departments such as nanotechnology, materials sciences, and energy engineering. In addition to this, we want to offer, within the Erasmus Plus program, the opportunity to earn a dual diploma from European

universities in programs that we have available or are newly opening – this is one of our priorities for our 2023 project goals. The Institute of Science at our University has, within the framework of the Bologna Process, applied for and been admitted to the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) since the 2013-2014 education year for graduate level education. And information on the course content in the application program for the doctoral level can be prepared as well. Our Institute has made the necessary adjustments to our post-graduate programs in accordance with the ECTS regulations.
