Department of Materials Science and Nanotechnology Engineering

Hello, I'm Professor Okan Öner Ekiz. I am a graduate of METU Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department. I did my master's and doctorate at the National Nanotechnology Research Center. I am currently working at OSTİM Technical University as a faculty member. I am also an entrepreneur. I am dealing with localizing the devices I used during my master's and doctorate. Materials science can be introduced as the engineering of changing the macro properties of a material by manipulating its micro and nano properties. Materials Science and Nanotechnology Engineering is a very important and fundamental engineering branch. To give an example, it is the materials that give the eras their name. For example; Ages such as the Bronze Age and the Paleolithic Age are named over the materials. Nanotechnology has become ubiquitous in our lives. Nanotechnology products are used everywhere from a mobile phone we use to a processor or a turbo engine. At the same time, materials science was one of the earliest engineering sciences, and most technologies that are currently progressing include advanced materials in their infrastructure. When we think about it, things like 12 nanometer processor, 16 nanometer processor are mentioned even in a computer. With the development of materials, chips are enabled to work faster. Likewise, the source of the difficulty in making an aircraft engine is the materials. For this reason, materials science is one of the most basic engineering sciences. In our department, basic engineering courses are given in the 1st and 2nd grade. In the 3rd year, there are specialized courses in the field of Materials and Nanotechnology, in the 4th year, mainly elective courses are given. There are general laboratories such as physics and chemistry laboratories within the scope of joint engineering courses taken in the 1st and 2nd grades at our university. There are various laboratories in our university to be used in the field of Materials and Nanotechnology in 3rd and 4th grade. The students of our department can easily find internship opportunities in many different fields. In addition, our university provides long-term internships to enable students to acquire more industry based knowledge. Materials Science and Nanotechnology is a very popular department in the world right now. For this reason, it is very easy to find opportunities such as graduate, doctorate or job opportunities abroad. In addition, our department is included in the Erasmus program. Our students can easily find a job after graduation. In every field of industry, there are places where Materials Science and Nanotechnology students can work. Our department is also very suitable for the field of entrepreneurship because the field of nanotechnology is a field that deals with new technologies. For students who will work in the industry, there are places where they can work in all areas of the industry, especially in the defense field. My advice to candidates who will prefer our department is that they should come to our department if they are interested in basic sciences. Because the Department of Materials Science and Nanotechnology Engineering, unlike other engineering branches, includes more basic sciences. In addition, students who graduate from the department will be able to find employment in many interdisciplinary fields as they graduate as an engineer. There are various job opportunities where students can work not only in basic sciences but also in engineering. If we talk about the opportunities offered by OSTİM Technical University, especially for our students who will come from abroad or from outside the city; First, OSTIM Technical University is a university located at the heart of the industry.
