Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

Hello, I am Prof. Dr. Halil Erhan EROĞLU. I am the head of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Yozgat Bozok University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Our department, affiliated to Erciyes University, started education as a biology department with a quota of 30 students in the academic year of 1996-1997. We are still carrying on with a quota of 30 students. We are still continuing as the department of molecular biology and genetics. We have 5 main branches of science in our department. They are general biology, botany, hydrobiology, zoology and molecular biology.
Our academic staff consists of 5 professors, 1 assistant professor and 2 research assistants.
As facilities; We have 4 classrooms, 1 student laboratory and 8 research laboratories.
Since our department is molecular biology and genetics, there are basic courses in molecular biology and genetics in general. Apart from these, we also have courses in the basic fields of biology such as general biology, animal biology, plant biology, cytology, hydrology and biochemistry. Our curriculum consists of 182 compulsory, 58 elective and 240 ECTS courses.
In our department, we have 1 fully equipped student laboratory and 8 research laboratories. We can explain the fully equipped part as follows; we have one microscope for each student. Apart from that, models of organs and systems, ready-made preparation sets and other chemical glass materials are available in our laboratories. In our research laboratory, our academic staff contribute to our university by publishing their researches. In addition, our master's and doctoral students continue their research activities.
There is no internship obligation in our department. There is a voluntary internship system, but we know that our students do internships in different hospitals and laboratories every year, which we believe will contribute to their practical work and their future professional life. They generally prefer genetics, microbiology, biochemistry and blood laboratories. In terms of graduation theses, there are seminars in the autumn term and graduation courses in the spring term. Here, our students gain experience such as determining a topic, presenting it, research, literature reviews, and turning it into a thesis.
We believe that such studies will especially benefit our students who plan to pursue an academic career. Our department has ERASMUS exchange programme, which is an education abroad programme. We have already had students going abroad as a department. We have a department coordinator and a faculty coordinator. Apart from that, the necessary information is given in detail on the web page of our university. If we have students who want to benefit from this programme, we contact our department coordinator and guide our students and we have students who benefit from this programme.
Our academic staff regularly attend national and international congresses and symposiums every year and present their academic studies. This event does not fall below a certain number. We also participate in promotional events, career days, science festivals and national events by organising promotional events, career days, science festivals and national events and by assigning duties to our students in such events. Our department seminars continue regularly. We are also making new plans for the autumn and spring semesters, and our seminar process is always going on.
After graduation, our students can pursue an academic career in universities. Apart from this, they have the opportunity to teach in public or private schools. They can work in classrooms and study centres. They have the opportunity to work as biologists or laboratorians in the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Forestry and Environment. They have the opportunity to work as biologists or laboratorians not only in ministries but also in private institutions and organisations. In addition, they can also find opportunities to work in different positions in different areas of the public sector. In this case, the most popular example is the police. We know that many of our graduates from this field are working as police officers.
Our students generally have difficulty in courses such as molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, molecular genetics and genetics. This may be because the subjects of the courses are long. We advise our students to focus on learning. In general, students may have difficulty because they are memorising or note-oriented. Apart from that, when they want to repeat the lessons, we repeat them during the lesson. Our students can always come to us and ask us easily when there is a subject they do not understand. When our students have problems, we are here for them as department teachers.
Candidates who will choose our department take the first step into a field that they will acquire as a profession throughout their lives. Therefore, they should prefer whichever department they like. This is very important. If they like and want, they should prefer molecular biology and genetics. Molecular biology is a field that has been on the rise in recent years. In this respect, we already know that our students will love it. Apart from that, since our department is a department related to life science, I would like to state that our courses are also very interesting and I believe that our students will love them. We can say that our university is at a good level in terms of facilities such as cafeteria, library, culture and social, sports area. In this respect, I believe that our students who will come from abroad to our university will be happy.
As a faculty member who has been at Yozgat Bozok University for years, I should especially state that we have moved from a campus with few transport and accommodation facilities to a well-equipped campus. Our students will come to a university with high facilities. When we look from an outside perspective, I would like to state that they will come to a well-equipped campus in terms of many faculties and colleges, as well as markets, mosques, cafeteria services, social facilities and sports fields. Apart from that, they can also benefit from special conditions such as double major and minor programs, student exchange programs such as ERASMUS, BOSUYEM (Continuing Education Application and Research Centre). When we compare Yozgat with other big cities, students will come to a student-friendly and more economical city. I believe that students coming from abroad will love Yozgat and Yozgat Bozok University. I wish success to all candidates who will enter the university exam.
