Department of Language and Speech Therapy

Hello, I am Derya Pancar. I am a student of Anadolu University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Language and Speech Therapy. Language and Speech Therapy Department is located in Anadolu University’s Yunus Emre Campus. It is a department where field courses are offered for the evaluation, diagnosis and therapy of individuals with language and speech disorders. In the Language and Speech Therapy Department, there are courses from different disciplines that form the basis of speech and language therapy for the first two years. In the 3rd and 4th grades, we have vocational courses such as Acquired Language Disorders, Developmental Language Disorders, and Fluency Disorders. In DİLKOM, Research Centre for Speech and Language Disorders, we have a voice analysis laboratory and motor speech and swallowing disorders laboratories. In these laboratories, there are devices to assist our evaluation process and therapies. In our department, we have a compulsory summer internship at the end of the second year. During the 3rd year, we do an observation internship at DİLKOM where we observe intern DKTs (Language and Speech Therapist). In the 4th grade, as intern DKTs, we do practical internships. At the same time, we are doing our observation internships in the 4th grade, at Eskişehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine, in related units such as ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat), Orthodontics. Apart from this, during the undergraduate period, we can receive trainings at the universities in the European Union and the USA, with which our department has an agreement, by making use of programs such as the Erasmus exchange program. The students who graduate from the speech and language therapy department receive the title of speech and language therapists, that is, DKTs. DKTs can work in hospitals, special education and rehabilitation centers. They can open their own private clinics. Again, in these institutions, they can work with individuals with acquired language disorders, developmental language disorders, speech sound disorders, fluency disorders, swallowing, motor speech, voice disorders, and cleft lip/palate. The Department of Language and Speech Therapy attracted my attention because it is a multidisciplinary department that includes different fields such as psychology, medical sciences, and educational sciences. Apart from this, it is a department that I preferred because we can work in different fields and there are many employment opportunities. In addition, it offers job opportunities in different working areas and the fields of employment were wide. I chose Anadolu University because of the fact that it has DİLKOM, the leading professors in its field. Eskişehir is a student-friendly city, the university's student clubs are active and the campus facilities are diverse. After graduation, I want to work in the field and improve myself. After that, I want to progress academically. My advice to candidates who will prefer this department is that they should consider that they will work in one-on-one interaction with individuals of a wide age range from childhood to old age. Apart from that, I recommend them to choose Anadolu University as it has DİLKOM within its body, it has internship opportunities, and, it offers the opportunity to receive training from leading teachers in their fields. I can say that they will have an enjoyable student life both on behalf of the department and the university, and I wish them success in the exam.
