English Teaching Department

Hello, I’m Ceren Karagol. I am a second grader in the Faculty of Education in Baskent University. I shall tell you why I chose this department. Ever since I was a kid I believed that I am keen on languages. Therefore even though being an English teacher wasn’t on my mind I chose this department because I wanted to do something that includes languages together with the opportunity it provides of being a teacher right after graduation. In our department primarily, basis lessons are being taught. They are teaching us how the teacher-student relationship should be or how we should behave during lessons when we become teachers. We are learning the basis of English, instead of direct English. But I can say that we are learning the contents of English. As in how to communicate with the students and how to teach them English. In our department beside English classes –English grammar and vocabulary etc. - we have Educational Psychology classes. Like I mentioned before we take this classes to be able to understand student’s psychology and to be able to help them. We have Entry to the Science of Education class, in addition to a class that teaches the basis of education. Beside that as I previously mentioned we have English basis lessons, Lexicology, English Literature, and Examination of Poetry. In the first and second semesters of the third year we start our internships. We’re sent to schools that are contracted with our university to start our internships. There is no need for thesis or anything else to graduate. You can graduate by getting the required grade-point average and reaching a certain level. After graduating from this department you can stay in the university as a lecturer or an academician. Also you can be teaching English in various institutions. Also you have the opportunity to do translation in companies with your diploma. So in fact there are lots of options, and lots of fields. Hello, I'm Kadir Yılmaz. I am a second grader in the Faculty of Education in Baskent University. Probably my most important reason for chosing English Teaching department was that since I was a kid i had an appealing view of the idea of teaching people something or affecting their lives in a some way. in addition to my interest in English, so i decided that English Teaching was the right department. I chose Baskent University because it was established more than twenty years ago so the system and the academic staff is steady. And this was an important criteria for me. Along with the side factors such as the campus environment and the frequency of the bus service strenghtened my will to choose Baskent University. I assume that I mostly benefit from the academic staff. Because our teachers are very succesfull with creating a sincere and a professional environment at the same time. During or after the classes you don't have to hesitate to ask questions and since we are studying teaching, the teacher profile as we see is so important. Of course also during the mid-terms and finals I benefit from the library frequently. And also the existence of the campus makes the time I spend in school nicer. As for transportation, once an hour there are free services taking off from Sihhiye and Tunus. This is a very good thing. And also in the mornings there are district services. District servises usually go through the roads of our houses instead of the main road. Also there are district services at five from school to home. These are such great opportunities for me. After graduation I want to do a master’s degree and doctorate either in Turkey or abroad. After then I want to start working as an academician. First of all, if you want to choose this department I think you shouldn't choose it based on getting a diploma. Because in my opinion tutoring is a very special occupation. If you don't have interest it might be a really bad experience for you. But if your communication skills with people are good, if you like to tell them and teach them things I think you should definetely choose English teaching. And if you want to live what we call the “University Life", and create good friends in a good campus environment and want to create a sincere but professional bond with your teachers you should choose Baskent University.
