Department of Economics
I'm Huzeyfe Erkam Candan. I am a Research Assistant in the Department of Economics at OSTIM Technical University. If a student chooses our department, they will get an answer to the question "What is economics?", the science of meeting the diverse and multi-faceted needs of people with insufficient resources. Economics is divided into some sub-branches. These branches are Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Development Economics, Environmental Economics, World Economics, and History of Economics. You may ask what economics does in the practical sense. "How can we improve the prosperity of countries with inadequate resources? How do companies and individuals act?” are our questions. Economics Science is a branch of science that briefly examines the relationship between production and distribution such as employment, inflation and growth through certain parameters (variables). In the Department of Economics at OSTIM Technical University, we have basic courses such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Finance, Econometrics, Statistics. It is more important for us to know which courses are taught with what logic than what courses are provided. As OSTIM Technical University, we have some principles that we have adopted. We are focused on basic training, analytical and technical training, and the practical training that comes later. With this kind of analysis, the student learns how to apply what he/she has learned in the analytical and technical education section, after learning the basic framework of economics and what is taught there within the framework of the courses. Thanks to this, they can combine the data and economics-related knowledge they have learned about. Where does the student use this information? Where can they learn these? We are talking about practical education, which is also included in the applied education model of our university. Here, the student finds a space where he/she can apply the information he/she has learned in the application area in the two areas I just mentioned. They learn and implement by working in the companies that we have contracted and signed protocols with as a part of the OSTIM ecosystem. We have computer laboratories that our economics department is using. In the computer laboratory, within the framework of our ComputerIzed Research Methods course, we teach R statistics program, Python software program and many other software languages that we consider very important for economics students. Thanks to these computer programming languages, we aim to enable our students to use economic data in these laboratories within this framework. As OSTIM Technical University, we do not adopt an internship program in the classical sense. Here, within the framework of the applied education model developed by our university, we actually meet this need. How does OSTIM Technical University implement the Applied Model? Our student receives an education in which they can use the theoretical knowledge they have learned in school in a practical sense , in the special departments within the companies that our university has signed protocols with, provided that there is at least 1 day per week in each semester from the 1st semester of the 1st grade until the last semester of the senior year. We call these Workplace Training, Applied Workplace Training, Workplace Experience and enable them to be graded within the framework of their credits. Our slogan is “Graduates with 4 years of experience”, which gives you an idea about the model that we are implementing here. Our university has various agreements with universities in many countries of Europe, such as Coventry University in the UK. Within the scope of these agreements, there are student exchanges. There are also exchange programs within the framework of certain congresses and conferences. In this regard, we are in contact with many universities. We attach serious importance to this work as we have adopted the international relations perspective that our university has determined for its vision. In the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, our university organizes seminars on Wednesdays called "Business and Finance Seminars", usually attended by people from the field or very valuable academicians from other universities. These seminars are activities that we frequently organize and that we want our students to participate in. In addition, we have an international congress called Smart Economic Planning and Industrial Policies, which we call SEPIP. International congresses attended by Hans Wissema, Piergiuseppe Fortunato, who is the author of the book "Third Generation University" and who is also a faculty member of the Department of Economics of our university, and very also internationally recognized academicians, take place at OSTIM Technical University, especially with the interest of our Department of Economics. It is a fundamental issue for us that our students can find a job after graduation. In this sense, the fact that our language of education is English and our aim of training graduates sought by both the private and public sectors is very important to us. In this context, what areas can they work in? Our economics graduates can find jobs in many national and international institutions and organizations. What are these international organizations? Our students can find work within institutions and organizations such as the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund IMF, various NGOs and international organizations of the European Union. On the other hand, to mention the national institutions and organizations where our students can work, the most prestigious ones are the Central Bank, Eximbank, commercial banks, relevant ministries, Non-governmental organizations and in fact all companies that produce products and services in the manufacturing industry and service sector, and their financial departments. To put briefly, we are talking about a department that is focused on statistical and numerical data. In this sense, I can say that the Department of Economics is a very suitable department for students who are good at math, numerical subjects, as well as for students who like to follow current events, who wonder why the currency rate rises, why and how the gross national product or inflation figures change, who like to that, that is, the cause and effect relationship of what is happening in the economic field. OSTIM Technical University is a university that welcomes its students, as the commute is quite easy, a university in the center of Ankara and close to the main roads and transportation facilities. There is a metro stop very close to our university. They can hop on that. On the other hand, the large number of students in Ankara and the social activities is an advantage. On the other hand, OSTIM Technical University offers a solid education opportunity to its students by combining practice and theory, as it appeals to a wide range of software companies and national defense companies in the OSTIM ecosystem. We wish success in the exam to all our students who have undertaken the university preparation studies, which is one of the most important stages of their lives, and we welcome them to OSTIM Technical University and The Department of Economics.
