Depatment of History
Hello, I am Prof. Dr. Yunus ÖZGER. I am the Head of the Department of History at Yozgat Bozok University, Faculty of Science and Literature.
The Department of History started education in the 1996-1997 academic year as an affiliate of Erciyes University Yozgat Faculty of Science and Literature. As of the 2008-2009 academic year, we opened the 2nd education programme. Currently, it continues both undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes. Our department has been accredited by FEDEK Accreditation Association (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Curricula of Science, Literature, Language, History and Geography Faculties) as of 2021. It is one of the two accredited departments within Yozgat Bozok University. In the Department of History, we have a total of 7 main disciplines including ancient history, medieval history, new age history, history of Ottoman institutions and civilisation, recent history, general Turkish history and history of the Republic of Turkey.
Our department has a strong academic staff. We serve our students with 4 professors, 2 associate professors, 6 assistant professors and 4 research assistants.
"The Department of History has prepared a curriculum centred on the European credit transfer system. For graduation, our students are required to collect 240 ECTS in total.
Our courses are grouped in 3 categories as compulsory courses, vocational elective courses and non-field elective courses. From ancient times to the history of the Republic of Turkey, almost every major discipline has an equal distribution of courses. However, we also have courses such as Seljuk history, Ottoman history, European history, Roman and Byzantine history. Our students complete their education by taking approximately 50 different courses during 4 years."
Our students take their courses in the classrooms and lecture halls in our department. We do not need any laboratory. They obtain their book deficiencies from our central library, which is located in the central campus of our university and contains thousands of books.
History department has a theoretical curriculum. However, our students have the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge they have learnt in the first 3 years in a course called graduation thesis in the last year. Some of our students who successfully complete their thesis studies can publish their thesis as a book by national or international publishing houses. In addition, our students who take pedogogogical formation can have internship opportunities in schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education.
Since 2008, the Department of History has signed agreements with various countries within the framework of ERASMUS exchange programmes and can send students who meet the necessary conditions to the relevant countries in this context.
We are in constant cooperation with the external stakeholders of the Department of History, such as the Turkish Historical Society and the Atatürk Research Centre, and we organise national or international congresses and symposiums with the support of these institutions.
Our students also take an active role in these congresses and symposiums. Our history department students can be employed as academicians if they are successful in ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination) and foreign language exams. Currently, we have about 20 graduated academician students working as research assistants, lecturers, doctoral lecturers and associate professors in various universities of our country. Graduates of the Department of History can also be employed as teachers in schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education and private schools if they take pedagogical formation courses and succeed in this. In addition, our students who are successful in courses such as Ottoman, Ottoman palaeography, Ottoman diploma can work as experts in institutions such as the Ottoman archives, the Republican archive, the Manuscripts Institution if they are successful in the exams opened by the relevant institutions. Apart from this, our students who fulfil the civil service requirements have the opportunity to be employed as civil servants, experts or assistant experts in various institutions of our country.
I recommend that students who are interested in history, who like research, who can analyse events with cause-effect relationships should choose the history department. Our history department has a very strong academic staff and I would like to inform that we provide very serious academic counselling to students who prefer us.
"First of all, Yozgat is right in the centre of Turkey in terms of location. It is a quiet city in terms of population density. All the facilities that our students may need are available.
In the history department, there are facilities to meet the dining hall, sports halls, cafeteria needs of our students. KYK (Credit Dormitories Institution) dormitories have extremely comfortable rooms and our students do not have any accommodation problems. You can also choose us to benefit from these opportunities offered by Yozgat Bozok University. I wish success to our students who will enter the university exam in advance. We are looking forward to see you at Yozgat Bozok University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of History in the new academic year.''
