Program of Laborant and Veterinary
I am doctor faculty member Muharrem Satılmıs. I am the Head of Vocational School of Menemen’s Veterinary Department. My area of expertise is Pharmacology and Toxicology. The Laboratory and Veterinary Health Program is the only program of the Veterinary Department under the Vocational School of Menemen. Our program is an associate degree program which consists of 4 semesters and has been designed according to the 3 + 1 Education Model. Our program was established in order to train semi-skilled technicians who are needed by the stakeholders of the food and livestock sector and to support the development of the livestock and food sector regionally, nationally and globally. Our department is situated in the campus of the Vocational School of Menemen. Our program offers Medical Laboratory Techniques courses along with the fundamental courses of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine which include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology. It also includes clinical and pre-clinical courses such as Animal Breeding, Animal Diseases, Animal Nutrition, and Breeding Pets. There are theoretical and practical courses in the first 3 terms which are then followed by workplace applications in the 4th term. The basic application laboratory of our department is in the pipeline. Our aim is to provide our students with basic analysis techniques and laboratory skills in this laboratory. Since we established our curriculum with a 3 + 1 Education Model, students have a compulsory summer internship at the end of the 3rd semester, and the 4th semester is set aside entirely for practice in a workplace. Apart from that, we have a graduation project. The aim of this project is for our students to gain skills in research, literature review, evaluation, and self-expression in order to improve their ability to follow the changes and developments in technology around the world after graduation. Our students can find employment opportunities in the public and private sectors after graduation. The main sources of employment in the public sector are the relevant establishments and organizations under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Students can also work in areas related to domestic animals such as cattle, small ruminants, poultry and seafood production along with vaccine and pharmaceutical industry related to this sector. In addition, they will have employment opportunities in all the stages of food production and consumption in Food Control Laboratories and food establishments. They can also work in municipalities, zoos, pet polyclinics, clinics and hospitals.
In the growing and developing world, factors such as biotechnological developments and climate change increase their negative effects on food day by day. Therefore, nutrition for people, food, is one of the strategic issues. One of the main study subjects of our graduate students is livestock and food. It will also constitute an important field of study in the future. It will be among the professions chosen in the future. For this reason, we recommend students to choose this department. Our university is a private-like state university with a young, dynamic, strong academic staff and social facilities. In addition, it should be the priority choice of our students because it is located in a metropolitan city and in an advantageous city and location in terms of accessing other social opportunities. I would like to say this to the candidates who will choose our university and our department. First of all, since their field of study firstly concerns animals, they must first of all have a love for animals and do not have animal phobias. In order to be successful in their profession, I recommend that they evaluate and decide by keeping these issues in mind and then choose accordingly. I wish success to students who will choose İzmir Bakırçay University, Menemen Vocational School Laboratory and Veterinary Health Program.
