Nursing
Hello, I am Professor Arzu Yıldırım. I am the Vice Dean of Yalova University Faculty of Health Sciences, Head of Nursing Department and Head of Psychiatric Nursing Department. Our Nursing Department started to accept students in the 2020-2021 academic year. It started with 62 students. In our department, there are 2 professors, 3 doctoral faculty members and 3 research assistants who are experts in their fields, who follow the current, scientific and technological developments and adopt lifelong learning as a principle. Our aim in the nursing department is to train professional nurses who are autonomous, self-confident, practitioner, educator, researcher, leader and manager with our qualified and contemporary education program. In line with this purpose, we aim to train nurses with professional ethics in fulfilling all roles and responsibilities who can determine the health needs of the individual, family and society, use the critical thinking process and evidence-based practices, establish effective interpersonal relationships, adopt lifelong learning, have the desire and belief to contribute to the development of professional nursing, and who can maintain their adherence to principles and laws and adopt the philosophy of nursing. In our Department of Nursing, we have 8 basic applied vocational courses, including the principles of nursing, surgical nursing, internal medicine nursing, obstetrics and gynecology nursing, child health and diseases nursing, psychiatric nursing, public health nursing and nursing management within the scope of applied vocational courses in line with the curriculum. In addition to basic medical science courses such as physiology, anatomy, microbiology, and pathology, we have various elective courses that will contribute to our students' personal and professional development. We have basic education, basic skills laboratory and simulation center in our Nursing Department. Our students receive basic nursing education in these laboratories before they go to clinical or field applications. These laboratories have been established to develop our students' cognitive, sensory and psychomotor skills. In our laboratories, students practice together with the teaching staff of the department, with the application units that they can work simultaneously. Our laboratories have a capacity for approximately 60-70 students. With the materials found in these laboratories, system-specific nursing practices such as evaluation of vital signs of our students, invasive interventions, oral parenteral drug applications, individual hygiene practices, nutrition, excretion, respiratory requirements and wound care are performed. In our simulation center, basic care applications are simulated through various scenarios. We have simulations of care, vital signs, enemas and catheterization at our center.
In the 2nd semester of our curriculum, students go to clinical practices, and, in parallel with other courses, they have internship requirements in the 7th and 8th semesters in order to reinforce the knowledge and skills they have gained in the first 3 years within the scope of clinical or field applications, to adapt to their professional life more easily after graduation and to provide qualified care. Our students will be able to practice in private and public hospitals, family and community health centers, community mental health centers, nursing homes, rehabilitation and training centers and similar institutions and organizations and educational institutions affiliated to provincial and district national education directorates for the purpose of the course. There are Erasmus, Farabi and Mevlana exchange programs within the body of the Foreign Relations Coordinator at our university. As the Nursing Department, we continue our efforts to increase the cultural and scientific interactions of our students, especially in the international arena, in cooperation with the Foreign Relations Coordinator. As the Nursing Department, a seminar on Mental Health in the Elderly During the Pandemic Process was held for the academic and administrative staff of our university within the scope of the 18-24 March Respect for the Elderly Week. We also held a national interview program on the career journey of nursing. In addition, our department’s professors participate in various activities such as congresses, symposiums, seminars and workshops specific to their fields. Our graduates are employed by taking the title of nurse in protective, therapeutic and rehabilitative fields, where they can provide the health care needs of healthy or sick individuals, families and society with a holistic approach, in line with the nursing process. After receiving the title of nurse, our graduates can work in institutions and organizations that provide health services such as private and public hospitals, family community health centers, nursing homes, rehabilitation and training centers, elderly care centers, counseling centers, and R&D centers. In addition, our graduates can complete their master's and doctorate programs after fulfilling the necessary requirements related to the field of nursing and can work as lecturers in the relevant units of universities. I recommend them to be professionals who; recognize human needs and reactions in the contemporary health system, are sensitive, empathic, critical-thinking, self-confident, self-sacrificing and enterprising, who can use up-to-date technologies and knowledge, are creative, adhere to ethical principles, can work based on evidence, can make independent decisions, and internalize the nursing profession. First of all, Yalova is a city located in a location where Turkey's very important industry and transportation networks are located. At the same time, it is a very important port city with its nature tourism, hunting tourism, coastal tourism and thermal tourism. Due to these features, our university is also preferred by international students. In this sense, it will contribute to our students getting to know various cultures and gaining different experiences. In addition, we have 47 student clubs in various fields at our university. We conduct social responsibility projects. Our central library provides uninterrupted service and provides access to online resources. I look forward to meeting with students who will choose our department and wish them success.
