Industrial Engineering
I am İbrahim Sabuncu, a doctoral lecturer. I am a faculty member at Yalova University, Department of Industrial Engineering. I did my doctorate here at Yalova University. I completed my master's and undergraduate education in the field of Industrial Engineering at Gaziantep and Çukurova Universities. I give lectures and conduct academic studies on social media analytics and system simulation. The industrial engineering department is one of the first departments that were established in Yalova in 2010. We accept over 60 students each year. Our quota is always full. Our language of instruction is 30% English. We offer course contents that are suitable for industry conditions and today's changing environment. Currently, we have 2 professors, 5 doctoral lecturers and 5 research assistants in our department. Our department is one of the highest rated departments of Yalova University. Industrial engineering is not only a branch that solely focuses on engineering, but also a branch that deals with social sciences. Since we are a hybrid department, that is, a department that integrates both social sciences and engineering sciences, we have courses related to social sciences such as management, strategic management, human resources management, marketing management, and production management. However, we have courses which emphasize our engineering side, enabling us to solve management problems from the engineering side. These are Analytical method courses such as system analysis, process management, system simulation and operations research. We also offer courses in data mining that will enable students to make decisions based on data. Therefore, in the Department of Industrial Engineering, we offer not only the engineering courses, but also the courses that are related to social sciences. We currently have a computer lab in our department. Our field of study generally consists of people and industry. We analyze the data we collect about the people and the industry on the computer. For example, in system simulation, we use a software called Simio, which costs around $140,000 in the market. We have such a software available for our students’ use. We provide our students with hands-on training on how to use this software in the computer laboratory. Also, our students will have the opportunity to use the R&D (research-development) laboratories there, within the scope of a protocol we made with the İMES Organized Industrial Zone, which is currently being established in Yalova. Our students have internships twice a year. There is a protocol we have made with İMES Organize Sanayi, which we have just mentioned, to help with these internships. Thanks to this protocol, students can perform production and management internships in large companies in the organized industrial zone here. At the same time, we have a long-term internship cooperation protocol with TUSAŞ-Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc., which has an important place in the Turkish defense industry.
Within the scope of Erasmus agreements, we have agreements with several countries in Europe such as Poland, Spain, Ukraine, Serbia. Within the scope of Erasmus, some of our students go to study abroad every year. We are trying to increase the number of the universities we have agreements with, under the scope of the Erasmus program. Our department organized an interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Congress in this period as the artificial intelligence has gained great importance. This was a multinational congress and was held with the participation of 8 universities from abroad and 5 universities from Turkey. Our department will continue to organize such international organizations in order to catch up with the developing technologies. Our graduates can work in many different fields. Indeed, our department has a hybrid format. Since it is a department that integrates both social and engineering disciplines, and we are a department that solves management problems with engineering techniques, industrial engineers are employed in all organizations that need management solutions. For example, they can work in the private sector in many different departments, from quality control and production-management officer to marketing and purchasing manager. Our graduates can also take part in the positions of assistant specialists in the public sector after taking the KPSS (Public Personnel Selection Examination). As a matter of fact, industrial engineers are employed in the public sector on issues such as productivity and quality management. I would recommend our department to students who are also interested in social sciences but are also interested in numerical methods and love mathematics. At the same time, industrial engineering will be an ideal department for students who want to work in different departments and organizations. Yalova has a very strategic geographical location. Although it is a small city, it is located in the middle of 3 big industrial cities such as Istanbul, Bursa and Kocaeli. This presents great opportunities, especially for our industry-focused department. It offers many internship opportunities for students in locations such as Kocaeli, Istanbul, Bursa. Also, it offers students a more comfortable student life since it is a small city. Yalova is a coastal region, 80% of which is forest. This city offers plenty of green, and a calm life, where students can both benefit from the natural beauties while focusing on their studies. I think it is an ideal university where they can study without experiencing big city problems, without being away from the industry. We wish success to the candidates who will choose Yalova University, the Department of Industrial Engineering.
