Turkish Language Education
Hello, I am Associate Professor Fatma Albayrak. I am a faculty member at Istanbul Medeniyet University, specifically in the Faculty of Educational Sciences, Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education. Additionally, I hold the positions of vice president of the department and vice dean of the faculty of educational sciences. Within the Faculty of Educational Sciences at Istanbul Medeniyet University, the Turkish teaching program is the only program that accepts active students under the Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education. Our program was introduced in the 2018-2019 academic year and produced its first graduates in 2022. Currently, our department offers a master's program, and preparations for opening a doctoral program are in the final stages. Our department boasts a competent and experienced academic staff, including three professors, two associate professors, two doctoral faculty members, a research assistant doctor, and a research assistant. The courses offered in the Istanbul Medeniyet University Turkish Language Teaching Program can be categorized into three main areas: teaching profession knowledge courses, Turkish education subject knowledge courses, and general culture courses.
The teaching profession knowledge courses comprise standard pedagogy formation courses established by the Higher Education Council (YÖK). These courses cover a wide range of topics, such as introduction to education, measurement and evaluation, teaching principles and methods, and guidance and teaching practices in schools. In contrast, our Turkish education field knowledge courses, which are specific to the Turkish Language Teaching program, aim to train Turkish teachers in the most comprehensive and well-equipped manner. These courses encompass subjects like Ottoman Turkish, Turkey Turkish, New Turkish Literature, Old Turkish Literature, and similar courses that explore Turkish language and literature from a historical perspective. Initially, the focus is more theoretical, but as the program progresses, we offer practical courses such as teaching vocabulary, teaching Turkish to foreigners, teaching Turkish to bilinguals, listening education, speaking education, reading education, writing education, grammar teaching, and other related subjects.
Furthermore, in the category of general culture and elective courses, we strive to serve our students not only as teacher candidates but also as well-rounded individuals, providing courses that contribute to self-education and benefit society. These courses include effective communication skills, voice and diction, career development, and planning. The Turkish teaching program aims to train qualified individuals who possess all the necessary qualities of language educators. Currently, the primary application area for our theoretical and applied courses is within private or public schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. Teaching practice courses in our program are also considered as part of internship practices. In this regard, internship placements are arranged in schools designated by the Provincial Directorate of National Education, in agreement with our dean's office, for our students in their final or third year who wish to participate in these courses. Moreover, with Turkish on its way to becoming a global language, students have practical opportunities to work in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language within public or private institutions dedicated to language instruction in various national and international contexts. One prominent institution in this regard is İMÜTÖMER, the Turkish Teaching Research and Application Center, which operates within Istanbul Medeniyet University. Here, our students have the chance to interact and engage with students from different parts of the world who are eager to learn our beautiful Turkish language and participate in educational processes. Our university offers various exchange programs such as ERASMUS, Mevlana, and Farabi. As part of the Turkish Teaching program, we have previously established an Erasmus Agreement with Poland and maintain contact with language teaching centers across Europe. We are continuously expanding our collaborations with different universities in this regard. Within our department, our experienced academic staff, who possess extensive expertise in various fields, organize a series of national and international symposiums and academic activities. Some notable examples include the RumeliSE language and literature symposium and the Turks in Europe and bilingualism symposium.
The primary focus of our Turkish Teaching program is to train future Turkish teachers. Upon graduation, our students can pursue careers as Turkish teachers in public or private institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. Furthermore, they have a wide range of career development opportunities, including roles in copywriting, editing, proofreading, and voice and diction specialization. The global advancement of the Turkish language also opens up new possibilities for them to work as Turkish instructors, teaching Turkish as a foreign language in various domestic and international courses and centers.
While our students may encounter challenges in theoretical courses, particularly those that delve into the intricacies of Turkish language and literature from a historical perspective, our experienced and highly competent instructors provide guidance and support. Istanbul Medeniyet University is strategically located in the heart of Istanbul's Asian side, offering our students the advantage of easy access to a vibrant social, cultural, and academic environment.
