History
Hello, I am Professor İsmail Hakkı KADI, the head of the History Department at Istanbul Medeniyet University. The History Department of Istanbul Medeniyet University was established in 2011 and has been offering undergraduate programs since 2015. Situated in the Faculty of Letters, our department is located on the South campus of the university. We provide two undergraduate programs, one in Turkish and another in English, and admit approximately one hundred students to these programs annually. Our department consists of nearly 30 highly qualified academic staff members who have received their education from prestigious universities both in Turkey and around the world. With professors who have studied in countries such as the United States, Germany, England, France, the Netherlands, and Austria, our history department represents a comprehensive synthesis of historiography traditions worldwide. In addition to compulsory courses that cover history methodology and fundamental historical knowledge, we offer elective courses that allow students to explore source languages and modern foreign languages. We encourage our students to choose these language courses and strive to develop their reading skills in the respective texts and languages. Furthermore, our department provides a variety of elective courses that enable students to deepen their knowledge in specific areas of interest. As a natural laboratory, Istanbul Medeniyet University offers a wealth of historical artifacts and cultural heritage, providing an ideal environment for our history department. Our university library, the largest and most well-equipped in Turkey, is a valuable resource for our students. Those pursuing pedagogical formation complete their internships in various educational institutions as part of their program. The History Department has established Erasmus Plus agreements with Bologna Universities in Italy, Siegen and Bonn Universities in Germany, and several universities in Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia. These partnerships allow our students to pursue a portion of their education at these esteemed institutions. Our faculty members regularly organize national and international workshops, congresses, and symposiums, providing students with opportunities to enhance their academic and social development. Upon graduation, our students have various career options. They can work as educators in different educational institutions or find employment in museums, archives, and the tourism sector. Additionally, given the widespread interest in history within the realm of social and human sciences, there are job opportunities in social media and other fields that require historical knowledge. We offer comprehensive academic counseling services to students who encounter challenges in writing their dissertations or expressing their thoughts effectively.
Studying history in Istanbul, a city renowned for its deep historical and cultural heritage, is a remarkable privilege. Situated at the heart of Istanbul's transportation network, our history department enables students to explore the city extensively and closely engage with its historical and cultural treasures. I strongly recommend our students to cultivate good reading habits, as this forms the foundation for becoming a proficient historian. It is also crucial to stay informed about current developments, as history is intimately connected to both the past and the present. I extend my best wishes to all students taking the university exams, and I warmly welcome prospective students to join the Department of History at the Faculty of Letters, Istanbul Medeniyet University.
