Visual Communication Design

Hello, dear students. I am Prof. Dr. Doğan ARSLAN. I am a lecturer and head of the Department of Visual Communication Design at Istanbul Medeniyet University, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. The department of visual communication design can be defined as a department where creative disciplines such as animation, illustration, game design, digital design, typography are blended and brought together within the framework of a problem and concrete studies are produced. In our visual communication design department, the first two years focus on application-oriented courses such as basic design, pattern, computer-aided design, sound design, illustration, while theoretical courses such as visual communication, design history, art history are also available in this process. In addition, in our third and fourth years, students strengthen their portfolios in order to find a job in the sector environment by focusing on their areas of interest in courses such as project courses such as graduation projects. Therefore, while students take theoretical and practical basic courses in the first two years, they will be able to choose their own fields and their own directions by focusing on project-oriented courses in the following years. Visual communication design and our department started its activities in 2019 and the student intake is carried out in the centralised system. In order to be a student in our department, you must be successful in the exams opened by the Higher Education Institution. Our department has two large and spacious workshops. We use these two workshops for pattern and basic design-oriented courses. We have nearly forty 27-inch computers. We also have a studio for photo shoots and other projects where we use a green screen. We also have rooms for other students to have extra time to work. There is also a design office for design, animation and illustration projects. We have two lecture theatres for 60 people for other theoretical courses of our department. Our students will have the opportunity to do internship through the career centre of our university. Third and fourth year students with a strong portfolio have the opportunity to work in various institutions and organisations in Istanbul. Our students may have the opportunity to do internship through the career centre of our university. Especially our third and fourth year students, with various opportunities and their own resources, start internships and freelance work in various institutions and organisations in Istanbul.
We can also proudly state that we have created a unit under the name of a design office in our department, especially in order to create a meeting between the sector and the student. In this unit, we bring professional works together with our students and analyse them in order to strengthen both the financial opportunity and the portfolio ratio of our students. We encourage our department students to compete especially in national and international competitions. In these competitions, we try to create energy and confidence by motivating our students and showing their work in these environments. In addition, since we are in Istanbul, we visit various galleries and museums with our students and try to create knowledge and experience in the sir environments there. In the autumn term of 2023-2024, we also have Istanbul Medeniyet University Design Days project. In these design days, we want to combine our students with designers working in a professional environment. We think that this will bring our department to the forefront. The department of visual communication design has the opportunity to work in many areas of the creative industry, especially because it is an interdisciplinary department. Graduates will have the opportunity to work in many fields such as corporate identity designer, web designer, digital designer, illustrator, animator, interface designer, graphic designer, broadcast graphic designer, animation and game designer. We see that our students have difficulties in drawing, drawing and computer programmes due to being assigned from the central system. However, we are trying to close this gap with the devotion and efforts of our teachers. But first of all, when our students come ready in such drawing subjects such as drawing, they will be able to solve many lessons easily. Since our university and therefore our department is located at the intersection of two distinguished districts such as Üsküdar and Kadıköy, students can easily reach our university by using transportation vehicles such as metro, minibus, marmaray from different districts. Candidates who will prefer our department should be especially interested in art, design, technology, programmes, generating ideas, dreaming and such visual and artistic fields.
