Department of Auidology

Hello, I am Doctor Faculty Member Deniz Tuz. I am the head of Department of Izmir Bakırçay University Department of Audiology. Audiologists are health personnel that make interventions towards preventing, diagnosing and treating hearing and balance problems. The Department of Audiology is a 4-year full time undergraduate education program which aims to educate audiologists with a high awareness for social health who always want to improve themselves. In the undergraduate program of audiology, the first-year courses generally include Health Sciences courses such as Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Biology. During the second year, the emphasis shifts towards occupational courses. These courses focus on hearing, balance, ringing and rehabilitation. In the fourth year, the courses weight more on practice courses where the students get the chance to apply what they have learnt in the courses that they have taken as well as a project course. We have laboratories where our students can practice what they have learnt in classes and learn the use of instruments used in the Science of Audiology. Students in the Department of Audiology will have compulsory internships almost every year in addition to a compulsory internship in the summer term of the second year within the body of our university. There is also a summer internship in the third year where our students will be required to do their internships in places outside of the university. The whole program for the fourth year will in fact be in the form of an internship. We will have applied internships for many courses and students will participate in these internships. In addition, in the first and second term of the fourth year, the students will receive project preparation courses. In this course, the students will plan a project in the field of Audiology in a topic that they will choose. They will produce and finalise this project. They will graduate this way. Our students at Izmir Bakırçay University Department of Audiology have the opportunity to continue their education abroad for 1 semester or 2 semesters through Erasmus Programme.
There are a number of international congresses in the field of Audiology and our students have the opportunity to take part in these congresses as participants or speakers. We also have many national congresses in the field of Audiology. Additionally, a lot of student congresses are also organised. In recent years, our students have had the opportunity to participate in all these congresses in the field of Audiology. There are a number of positions for our students to work in after graduation. They can work in many institutions that diagnose and treat hearing, balance, ringing and provide rehabilitation services. What are these institutions? Some of these are private and state hospitals. They can also find employment in Audiology clinics. They can work in hearing aid application and sales centres. Since the Department of Audiology is a newly established department in Turkey, there are big vacancies in terms of academic staff in universities; so our students can easily find work in universities as academic personnel if they wish. My advice for our students would be to remember that the those we work with and care for are human beings and to work in a solution-oriented manner by taking into account all the aspects of these individuals from their psychology to their quality of life. I advise them to always empathise in their communications with these individuals and to always improve themselves by taking time for themselves for hobbies outside of their work like sports and art. Izmir Bakırçay University has many facilities for those students who will come to Izmir Bakırçay University from other cities. First of all, Izmir Bakırçay University has a rich library. They can research using the electronic and printed resources in this library any time they want. Our university also has indoor and outdoor sports facilities. They will have the opportunity to do sports in any field that they are interested in. We would be happy to see those who wish to choose Izmir Bakırçay University among us.
