Department of Industrial Engineering
I am a Research Assistant at İzmir Bakırçay University, Department of Industrial Engineering. I conduct studies on Industrial Engineering topics such as Operations Research, Scheduling, Constraint Programming and Combinatorial Optimization. Our Industrial Engineer department received its first students in the fall semester of 2017-2018. Although it is a newly established department, the academic staff is completely assigned and will produce its first graduates in 2022 next year. Our department courses are given by competent academic staff members who are experts in their fields. In addition to having an operation-oriented curriculum, we also have courses on different current topics such as Information Systems and Sustainable Systems. Our department is located in Izmir Seyrek, Menemen campus. We have a Study and Ergonomics Laboratory, a Basic Sciences Laboratory and four Computer Laboratories in use in our department. There is no infrastructural shortcoming in our department, so we are able to conduct all our courses. An applied engineering education model has been developed, as is valid in all departments of our faculty. In this model, students will be able to do summer internship at the end of the sixth semester, conduct a graduation project for the seventh semester, and have the opportunity to participate in a long-term internship in the companies covered by the protocol during the last semester. We want our students to have an internship experience before they graduate and formulate an industrial engineering problem they have identified in the private sector, solve them and implement solutions. In this way, we plan to train Industrial Engineers who have certain skills and are able to propose applicable solutions to problems. Our department students can join the Erasmus program at partner universities in Germany, Spain, Portugal and Latvia. They will have the opportunity to study there for one or two semesters of an academic year. Faculty members of our department frequently attend national and international events and conferences. Also, the number of published works from our department is very high compared to many other universities in Turkey. In this context, we are planning to organize national and international conferences and events in our department. These events are planned to be conducted on production research topics such as Operations Research and Artificial Intelligence.
Industrial Engineers have a great chance in finding employment. They can work in departments such as production planning, purchasing, quality and method in the production sector. In the banking sector they can find work in departments as assistant inspectors for risk management. In the information sector, they can work as business analysts and software analysts. Today, we believe that Industrial Engineers should have proper coding skills. For this reason, we have developed a curriculum focusing on informatics and we aim to increase the number of fields engineers who graduate from our department can get involved in. I strongly recommend that they look up the academic staff, curriculum and the facilities of our department. The advantage of our university being recently established is that it has a competent and dynamic academic staff and that its curriculum includes current subjects, unlike the traditional industrial engineering curriculum. In addition, the applied engineering education model we have developed offers students the opportunity to gain work experience before they graduate. Thanks to this experience, students will be able to easily identify problems in the sector and develop applicable solving methods for these problems. Unlike the classical industrial engineering curriculum, the curriculum of the Industrial Engineering Department of our university also focuses on different fields such as Machine Learning and Information Systems. The proximity of our university to the industrial zones increases the university-industry cooperation partnership with the forerunning companies and enterprises of Izmir. Cultural and artistic activities and events are of abundance in İzmir. We also want our students to develop their social skills through cultural and artistic activities. In addition, our university administration attaches great importance to student communities and social activities. Our student communities are quite active. For this reason, the students who will choose our department will graduate with the necessary academic and social skills. This is what we have in mind for Industrial Engineers. We wish success to all students who will choose İzmir Bakırçay University, Department of Industrial Engineering.
