Biomedical Engineering

Hello dear friends, I am Tarkan Akderya, Doctor Faculty Member in Izmir Bakırçay University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Biomedical Engineering. We have a total of 8 academic staff with 7 faculty members and 1 research assistant in Izmir Bakırçay University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Biomedical Engineering. Our Head of Department is Professor Akil Birkan Selçuk and we also have 3 associate professors and 3 doctor faculty members. The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture include Industrial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Electrical-Electronic Engineering in addition to our department. We actively have 2nd year students at our department at the moment. Our first year and second year students are actively continuing their education. The curriculum we offer students in Izmir Bakırça University Biomedical Engineering consists of general introduction courses like in all engineering sciences and also some compulsory courses. We only have introductory courses to Biomedical Engineering in the first and second semesters. Our second-year programme mostly includes courses that we believe will be instrumental in the development of our students in fundamental engineering sciences and field of engineering. Our curriculum for 3rd and 4th years consists of courses that will define Biomedical Engineering to our students as part of a discipline and offer a chance and opportunity for our students to improve themselves in this field. Our students have the opportunity to do an internship for a semester in the 4th year. This offers them an amazing opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into practice in an interactive manner. We are trying to offer an applied education for our students at Izmir Bakırçay University Biomedical Engineering. Naturally we have laboratories where we can apply what we learn as part of this applied education mentality. Our laboratories include Biomechanical Laboratory, laboratories with regards to Fundamental Biomedical Engineering, Biosensor Laboratory and Calibration Laboratory. And since our university is a newly established institution with a 3-4 years, we are constantly trying to improve and enhance these laboratories and increase the potential of the laboratories so that our students can have the best opportunities in this field.
Our students receive education for 8 semesters in the department of Biomedical Engineering. After taking courses on fundamental engineering sciences in the 1st year, they take courses that are part of the Biomedical Engineering discipline in the 2nd and 3rd years. In the 4th year, we offer our students applied projects and internships possibilities where they will find opportunities to practice what they have learnt. This internship possibility gives the students a chance to have an applied internship for a whole semester. We want our students to allocate their 8th semester for the internships and hence we organised our curriculum in this regard. The reason why we prepared an applied curriculum is because we hoped our students will improve themselves in the best way possible and prepare themselves for the market. We offer all our students the chance to study abroad with the Erasmus programme in Izmir Bakırçay University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. We also have an interactive relationship with the guest students coming from other countries. We are trying to form a structure in Izmir Bakırçay University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture where we always try to follow the fundamental scientific developments. Therefore, we try to organise academic events within the body of our university as well as the Department of Biomedical Engineering that will encourage the participation of both academic staff and students such as workshops, seminars, conferences and congresses. There is a wide range of employment opportunities for those who will graduate from Izmir Bakırçay University Department of Biomedical Engineering. Some of these employment opportunities include hospitals, research laboratories, enterprises that manufacture biomedical devices and equipments. As we offer an education curriculum for our students that include courses from Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Electrical-Electronics Engineering, when they graduate, they are knowledgeable and well-equipped in these areas as well. Therefore, our primary concern is to instil in our students the ability to look at things from an engineering perspective. We believe the students who have gained an engineering perspective can easily apply for jobs in places looking for engineers or positions with regards to Biomedical Engineering.
We believe we provide an environment for our students who will choose in Izmır Bakırçay University Department of Biomedical Engineering that will foster an overall development with all the social, academic, scientific and cultural activities we offer our students along with our campus and curriculum. In this environment, our students will feel the privilege of receiving education in our interactive and continually updated programme by benefiting from academic events. They will also be introduced to an environment that will always contribute to their development in their education lives as our university, being a newly established one, always receives new investments. Therefore, we try to offer a curriculum for the students who will choose our department that continuously improves, renews itself, one that is always open to scientific developments. We can also say that we will provide opportunities such as internships and training for our graduates in the Izmir Bakırçay University Hospital, with which we are affiliated. Similarly, we believe that the people who will graduate from this department will easily utilise the knowledge and information that they have acquired during their education in their professional lives. We provide convenience for transportation for the students who will come from outside of Izmir for Izmir Bakırçay University Biomedical Engineering; and I would also like to remind them of the wide range of transportation and accommodation possibilities around the campus. We would like to offer an education life for our students where they can always communicate in the university. We offer places like laboratories and libraries, where students can improve themselves in the best way possible for their use. Our students also continuously communicate and interact with our academic staff. So, our students get the chance to improve themselves in the best way as part of an interactive education model. I wish success to all the students who will choose Izmir Bakırçay University Biomedical Engineering in their education. Students will get the chance to see the privilege of getting university education in Izmir, studying under a new, interactive and continuously improving administration that is doing its best to offer the students all kinds of possibilities and will see that they have made the right choice.
