Department of Psychology

Hello, I'm Serdal Boran. I am a third year student at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Department of Psychology. Our department is basically a branch of science that studies people and their behaviors. The courses in our department are based on sub-fields such as Introduction to Psychology in the first year, Personality Theories, Social Psychology, History of Psychology, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and Addiction Psychology in the second year. Afterwards, there are courses such as Psychopathology and Psychopathology 2, which focus mostly on psychological disorders. Apart from this, in the last year, more field-oriented courses are given by going beyond the theoretical knowledge, such as Clinical Psychology and Interview Techniques. There is no workshop studio nor laboratory in our department. However, there are library and study halls in the campus. Our school is currently cooperating with Northern Cyprus Green Crescent and Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital on internships. Fourth year students take charge in the specific departments at the state hospital and the Green Crescent within the scope of the Field Study Course. After graduating from our department, we can work in institutions such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Family and Social Services, or various counseling centers and rehabilitation centers. My main reason for choosing this department is that I like communicating with people and that I think I can improve myself in this field. The reason why I chose Social Sciences University of Ankara is that it is the only public social sciences university in Northern Cyprus. Since the academicians in our department are sincere, we are in constant contact with them. Therefore, we can always reach out to our teachers. Also we can use the library either physically or online at our university. In addition, we host many activities through the clubs in our university. In fact, since I am the Chairman of the Psychology Club Board of Directors, I take an active role in the organization of many activities and events. After graduation, I want to get a Master's Degree in Developmental Psychology or Clinical Psychology. Apart from that, I want to work in places such as counseling centers and private education institutions. I recommend newcomers in the Department of Psychology to constantly keep in touch with our academics and among themselves. Apart from that, I recommend them to be active in student clubs. I would also like to point out the importance of ethical rules of the Department of Psychology. I wish success to all students who will take the exam.
