Econometrics

I'm Lecturer Ayşe Özekin. I have been working in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Department of Econometrics since 2009. In 2017, I completed my doctorate degree in Marmara University, Institute of Social Sciences. Since 2018, I have been working as a lecturer. The Department of Econometrics started to admit students in the 2009-2010 academic year. We were one of the first ten universities in Turkey to provide education in the field of econometrics. Between 2015-2018, we continued to provide education with 100% occupancy rates. Since 2016, we provide a graduate education program. We provide graduate education with thesis in the department of econometrics. Apart from this, we currently have close to one hundred active students. First of all, we have courses in fundamental areas such as statistics, econometrics, directional action research, and mathematics. Apart from this, we provide elective courses such as database applications, basic information technologies, introduction to algorithms so that students can develop in the field of information technologies. We know that big data and big data analytics have gained importance in many business areas, especially abroad. In this direction, we have added elective courses for many different fields such as simulation techniques, machine learning, and deep learning in our curriculum. In the coming years, we aim to provide more comprehensive information to students with these elective courses. Our department courses are taught in classrooms and computer labs. The lecture halls, classrooms, computer laboratories provided by our school are quite sufficient, and we can also use the meeting rooms and conference rooms of our university. Students can also actively benefit from them. Apart from this, we have large computer labs where our special package programs are installed for our department courses. Students can actively benefit from these. There is no compulsory internship program in our department. However, they can do internships if they want. Apart from this, our Career Development Application and Research Center at our university helps students with their internships. Many different international symposiums, workshops and conferences are held in our faculty throughout the year. As a department, we hosted the international conference on economics, finance and econometrics in 2018. Apart from this, there are different international symposiums and workshops that we will host in the coming years. In each of these organizations, we get help from students to support us. Within the framework of our university's ERASMUS agreements, the students can participate in internship programs and educational mobility. We have agreements with universities from many different countries such as Poland, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, and Czechia. Apart from this, we can provide student mobility with Mevlana and Farabi programs within the country.
First of all, since the graduates of the Econometrics department know data analysis, they can work in departments where they can analyze data in many public institutions. Such as the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the Supreme Statistics Agency, the banking regulation and supervision agency, and the central bank. Apart from this, there are many job opportunities in the private sector, especially in the risk analysis department. In addition, in recent years, we see that survey companies and private research companies also employ econometrics graduates. In addition, we observe that many companies working in these fields, which carry out simulation-based and algorithm-based works in the private sector, prefer econometrics graduates. We see that students have difficulties especially in courses such as mathematics and statistics. We are constantly supporting them to overcome these difficulties. We are working to eliminate these deficiencies by providing applied courses, giving examples from life, especially before the exams. Candidates who will attend our department must first of all like math courses, and if they are interested to work on subjects such as simulations, modeling, and artificial intelligence, if they are good with data, our department is suitable for them. Our university is located in a beautiful campus area that is developing day by day, with its lecture halls, state-of-the-art classrooms, sports fields, and social areas. We have a large library with hundreds of thousands of electronic resources. The university offers the opportunity to meet with international students and get to know different cultures. Finally, with its young and dynamic academic staff, advantageous location, we are taking fast and sure steps towards becoming the state university of the future.
