Geography Department
Greetings, I am Professor Erdal KARAKAŞ, the Head of the Department of Geography at Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Our department, established in 2009, offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs with five main branches of science including physical geography, human and economic geography, Turkish geography, regional geography, and geographic information systems. We have a team of dedicated faculty members consisting of 2 professors, 4 associate professors, 3 doctoral lecturers, and 2 research assistants. Our department focuses on the study of human and spatial sciences, exploring the activities of people on the earth's natural environment.
In our department, we offer a range of courses in physical geography, human and economic geography, Turkish geography, and geographic information systems. Our mandatory courses cover a range of topics including geology, geomorphology, hydrology, soil, introduction to human economic geography, industry, transportation, and more. Meanwhile, elective courses begin from the second year and students graduate with a thesis. To support our students, we have a geographic information systems laboratory, a technical drawing room, and a laboratory related to physical geography, sedimentology, and stones. We also have a collection of stones and boron products, as well as geological and physical maps in various scales.
Our students are encouraged to participate in international exchanges through programs such as ERASMUS, and we currently have partnerships with Lodz University in Poland. We also organize various workshops and symposiums on a range of topics, such as the Transhumance Symposium and Climatology Workshop. Graduates of our program have the opportunity to teach at the Ministry of National Education and private schools or work in public institutions depending on their expertise in GIS.
Although some students may encounter difficulties in numerical courses, our faculty members are dedicated to providing necessary support and preparation for their success. We welcome students who are passionate about geography and offer a comfortable and enriching environment with our libraries, social facilities, and recreational areas. We wish the best of luck to all students who will be taking the university entrance exam this year and invite them to consider Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Geography.
