Department of Sociology
Greetings! I am Beyza Nur Köseoğlu, currently in my fourth year at Balıkesir University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, majoring in Sociology. The Sociology Department was established in 2006 and is situated on the Çağış Campus. Sociology is a scientific discipline that investigates society and human interactions, examining how individuals and groups lead their lives. Through the analysis of gathered data, it presents us with findings and insights.
During the initial year, we primarily take introductory courses such as Sociology, Psychology, and Philosophy. As we progress, we delve into core subjects like Sociology of Education, Sociology of Crime, Sociology of Health, and Classical Sociology Theories. Our Sociology Department is equipped with computer laboratories where we learn statistical analysis using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).
Unlike some other programs, our Sociology Department does not have a mandatory internship program. However, we engage in voluntary internships, which typically span 20 working days. Upon completing our degree, we have employment opportunities in various governmental institutions such as the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as municipal organizations.
I personally chose this department due to my sociable nature, my inclination to listen to and address social problems within my surroundings, and my genuine interest in social issues. Balıkesir University appealed to me because of its convenient transportation options and dormitory facilities. I have greatly benefited from the dedicated teaching staff, as they are available during office hours for one-on-one interactions, providing valuable guidance and solutions to our queries. Additionally, I make good use of the library resources. Upon graduation, my aspiration is to pursue a postgraduate examination, complete a master's degree, and pursue a career in academia.
Prospective students considering the Sociology department should possess an inquisitive spirit. They should be prepared to conduct fieldwork, engage in experiments and observations, and have a willingness to undertake extensive reading. Apart from these aspects, I believe they will excel. I extend my best wishes to all my friends who will be taking the university entrance exam. We eagerly await welcoming you to the Sociology Department at Balıkesir University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
