Public Finance
Hello, I'm Professor Fatih SARIOGLU, the Head of the Department of Public Finance at Istanbul Medeniyet University, Faculty of Political Sciences. Our department is one of the newest departments at Istanbul Medeniyet University, having started accepting students in the 2020-2021 academic year. We are thrilled to graduate our first batch of students in 2024 and are excited to introduce a public finance program taught in English for the first time. In addition to undergraduate education, we offer master's and doctoral programs in our department.
From the second year onwards, we provide elective courses in addition to the compulsory ones, with a stronger focus on electives starting from the third semester. We encourage our students to pursue their interests and develop their abilities. Starting from the third year, we offer incentives for our students to learn a second foreign language, such as Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, or Persian. Our aim is to challenge the perception that finance students primarily take theoretical courses in political sciences or economic and administrative sciences faculties. We place importance on providing our students with theoretical education as well as practical applications in a laboratory environment.
In addition to our general-purpose computer laboratory, we have recently established a finance laboratory in collaboration with Borsa İstanbul (Istanbul Stock Exchange) since the 2023-2024 academic year. This laboratory aims to enhance our students' theoretical knowledge through practical exercises. Although internships are not mandatory in the Department of Public Finance's curriculum, we encourage our students to engage in voluntary internships, particularly with financial advisors. In terms of job opportunities, students from our department, as well as those from faculties of political sciences, economics, and administrative sciences, have similar prospects. However, we believe that our students have an advantage due to our department's balanced curriculum covering areas such as economics, business administration, public administration, accounting, and law.
Graduates from our department find employment in fields such as expertise, inspectorship, and group A positions in banks and ministries. Furthermore, important career paths available to our students include administrative judgeship in the Ministry of Justice, district governorship in the Ministry of the Interior, and auditorship in the Court of Accounts. While we admit students based on equal weight grades, we acknowledge that some students may face challenges in numeracy-based courses. To address this, we encourage them to work in laboratories and participate in volunteer internships to overcome these difficulties.
Accommodation and scholarships are among the main concerns for students coming from outside of Istanbul. However, Istanbul offers advantages in these areas, and we aim to provide financial support to our students through the newly established Istanbul Medeniyet University Alumni and Members Association. Additionally, we plan to open two dormitories with a capacity of 700 male and 700 female students at our Tuzla Orhanlı Campus starting from the 2024-2025 academic year.
I recommend students taking the university entrance exam to consider studying in metropolitan cities. I believe that metropolitan cities provide unique opportunities for student development. I advise them to choose departments that foster knowledge sharing and have a low student-to-faculty member ratio. Students who choose the Public Finance Department at Istanbul Medeniyet University will not regret their decision. Apart from joining the A group staff, our graduates also have the option to start their own businesses. Upon completing internships following graduation, they can become independent accountants or financial advisors and pursue entrepreneurship.
First and foremost, I wish success to all students taking the university exam. I urge them to consider the Department of Public Finance at the Faculty of Political Sciences, Istanbul Medeniyet University, and not to overlook this option in their preferences.
