Guidance and Psychological Counseling

Hello everyone. I am Prof. Dr. Ahmet AKIN, the Head of the Department of Guidance and Counseling in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at Istanbul Medeniyet University. I have been serving in this position since 2017. I focus on individuals who engage in self-sabotage and self-deception, among various other disciplines. The Department of Guidance and Counseling in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at Istanbul Medeniyet University offers a 4-year undergraduate program. We have approximately 250 students enrolled in our undergraduate program. These students receive education from competent instructors, most of whom are proficient in teaching in a foreign language. Our instructors not only possess academic competence but also demonstrate a high level of dedication to their students' social interactions and personal development. Throughout the undergraduate program in guidance and counseling, our students take a wide range of courses, including personality theories, counseling theories, vocational assessments, family counseling, career counseling, test development, and many more. Prominent courses also include introduction to guidance and counseling, measurement and evaluation in education, physiological psychology, and introduction to educational sciences. In the fourth year, our undergraduate students in guidance and counseling participate in practical courses, such as individual counseling and group counseling, which take place in designated counseling rooms. To facilitate these courses, counseling rooms for individual and group counseling are available to our students. In the fourth year, our students also complete a 1-year internship in private or public schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. Additionally, they are required to carry out a project-style final assignment in the seminar course on guidance and counseling services. Within the framework of ERASMUS, our undergraduate students in guidance and counseling have the opportunity to gain international experience by studying for a year or one semester at partner universities in various European countries. Furthermore, our students can work in family courts. At the same time, they can find employment opportunities in various public or private institutions in the fields of career counseling, sports counseling, and family counseling. The three most challenging courses for undergraduate students in guidance and psychological counseling are physiological psychology, behavior disorders, and statistics. This is what we observe. To help students overcome these challenges, we provide them with preliminary information and encourage them to engage in pre-readings. One of the most important features of our university is the quality of our faculty. Almost all of our professors have international experience and the ability to teach in English. Additionally, we have professors who have proven themselves in academic research. In addition to academic opportunities, our students also benefit from the advantageous location of our university. We are located in the heart of the city, close to the metro, metrobus, and other public transportation options. Moreover, our university library is the largest library in Istanbul. In our library, students not only read books but also have the opportunity to design activities, engage in various project works, and participate in a wide range of seminars.
