Faculty of Law
Hello everyone. First of all, welcome to Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Law. I am Dr. Sezen KAMA IŞIK, an Associate Professor at the Department of Constitutional Law. Although the establishment of Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Law dates back to 2010, the faculty started with 80 students in the 2016-2017 academic year. However, currently, we continue our education with approximately 195 students, including the quota for top-ranking students. Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Law is located in a highly accessible area in Istanbul due to the central location of our university. In law faculties, there are departments of private law and public law, and the courses are conducted between these two departments. In the field of public law, there are courses on constitutional law, criminal law, administrative law, general public law, international law, legal philosophy, legal sociology, and legal history. The courses in private law include civil law, commercial law, law of obligations, international private law, and civil procedural law. Libraries are the most ancient learning areas for law faculty students. In this regard, the Ziraat Bank Library at Istanbul Medeniyet University, where we are currently located, is among Turkey's leading university libraries and stands out as an exemplary university library in Turkey. In addition, within the framework of workshop activities, we prepare for mock trials and various legal competitions together with our professors during the courses. Furthermore, I must mention that through student clubs, the law faculty organizes year-round simulated parliament sessions and mock trial activities, in which our students, together with our professors, achieve great success. Regarding internships, they are optional during undergraduate education in the law faculty. However, compulsory internships are carried out for the professions of lawyer, judge, and prosecutor after completing the undergraduate program. In this regard, Istanbul Medeniyet University Law Faculty organizes career days, which are realized with the participation of our professors and students. Our university, thanks to its international office, has established ERASMUS agreements with countries such as Germany, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain for our faculty, and will continue to do so. Istanbul Medeniyet University Law Faculty organizes two international programs. The first one is the International Medical Law Congress, and the other is the International Information and Technology Law Symposium.
Law faculties are among the most diverse fields within social sciences. A graduate of the Law Faculty can become a lawyer, judge, prosecutor, academician, or notary. Furthermore, they can also work as legal experts in public institutions and organizations. A graduate can become an inspector, executive director, or assistant executive director. Additionally, it is observed that law graduates are widely present in both the media and the parliament. Every student has a different mindset. I would like to emphasize to the students who will choose us that they should be aware of what the world of law is. Working diligently here on a daily basis is important. I would like to point out that being a boutique law faculty is highly advantageous for our candidate students. Because I observe that they can have direct communication with the relevant course instructor and research assistants, and seek their help in areas where they encounter difficulties. Hence, I also want to express here that they can contact the instructor of the challenging course to benefit from their study methods. Candidates should know that Legal education is a challenging process. They should be individuals who enjoy reading, possess analytical thinking skills, and have the capacity to improve their communication and foreign language skills. In this regard, it is crucial for them to establish direct communication with our faculty members to stay informed about the course content and ongoing practices. Studying law is not merely a four-year educational period, I believe it is a way of life. Therefore, I think that students who choose us should embrace the legal profession in every aspect of their lives, from their attire to their speech, the books they read, the movies they watch, and their attitude towards life. Therefore, we aim to continue providing the environment that Istanbul Medeniyet University Law Faculty students have experienced so far. In a globalizing world with increasing competition, I believe that Law Faculty students should specialize in multiple fields. This issue is closely related to learning languages. Particularly, the need for competent legal professionals who can compare and evaluate the laws of different countries with their own national legal framework by learning languages, especially English, is growing day by day. I believe that the knowledge or scientific perspective you acquire at university is never limited tothis enclosure. Therefore, when you choose Istanbul Medeniyet University Law Faculty and take your first step at Istanbul, I believe that you will learn a lot. Living in a metropolis like Istanbul has its advantages and disadvantages. The abundance of social environments where you can develop yourself intellectually and being a state university in Istanbul are among the advantages. It can be said that the relationships between our faculty members and students are very close due to the boutique environment of Istanbul Medeniyet University Law Faculty. I must remind the following to the candidates who will choose our faculty with the ideal of becoming a judge or a prosecutor. Istanbul Medeniyet University Law Faculty ranked first in Istanbul and ninth in Turkey in the judicial exam. In addition to that, we have graduates who have found internship and work opportunities at the United Nations, as well as those who have pursued their master's and doctoral education abroad by benefiting from scholarships offered by international organizations. Therefore, if you want to take advantage of all the opportunities offered by a state university in Istanbul and receive education in a boutique and friendly environment, we welcome you to Istanbul Medeniyet University Law Faculty. We wish good luck to all the candidates taking the exam. We look forward to welcoming all of you to Istanbul Medeniyet University Law Faculty.
