Classroom Education
Hello, I am Dr. Selim Tiryakiol, an associate professor in the Department of Classroom Education in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at Istanbul Medeniyet University. I am also the head of the Department of Classroom Education. Within the Graduate Education Institute of Istanbul Medeniyet University, we have a thesis-based master's program in the Department of Elementary Education and Classroom Education. Additionally, we are currently preparing for the application process for a non-thesis master's program within our department, which we expect to start in 2023. Our aim is to train classroom teachers who possess universal and national values in the thesis-based master's program of classroom education and in the Department of Classroom Education. We have potential candidates among the current classroom teachers working in the Ministry of National Education or private institutions, as well as among prospective candidates. The field of classroom education inherently requires an interdisciplinary perspective. It encompasses various subjects such as Turkish, mathematics, science, life skills, early literacy, and children's literature, which require specialization in each of these areas. We plan to educate our prospective students at this level of specialization. Graduates who have completed a master's degree in the Department of Classroom Education have specialized in one of these subjects by choosing it for their thesis work. It is important to note that classroom education typically covers the age range from around 6 to 12 years old. Although it is a four-year level, we work with children in the National Education level. Our graduates are able to provide education in subjects such as mathematics and Turkish language to children. They become specialized teachers who can deliver mathematics, Turkish language, and science education to children. In this sense, graduates of the Department of Classroom Education can include graduates of classroom teaching, preschool teaching, child development, and any other related field who want to continue their expertise in this field. We also collaborate with teachers working in early childhood education in conducting this program. The Graduate Education Institute implements an interdisciplinary perspective. We collaborate with our teachers working in early childhood education, special education department, and educational sciences. Our students can conduct their theses and co-supervision with professors from different disciplines. They can choose both a supervisor from the Department of Classroom Education and another supervisor from a different field. These can be early childhood and education science supervisors. They can select a supervisor and conduct their theses in collaboration with these supervisors through a co-supervision model if they wish.
Our faculty members are all competent experts in their fields. They have national and international publications, and some of them have international experience. We have faculty members who have worked as visiting researchers in different universities in the United States and Europe. Prospective students can visit our website to obtain information about our faculty members and their areas of research. By researching our faculty members and their areas of expertise, students can make more informed applications to the thesis-based master's program in the Department of Classroom Education. We value the collaboration between students and their advisors. In the process of writing their theses, students can meet regularly with their advisors during office hours, on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis, to advance their work. We also encourage students to derive test and article studies and take steps in the academic world under the guidance of their advisors. Additionally, our students have access to our university library. When they explore and examine it, they will see the extensive physical facilities of our university. Our university has one of the largest libraries in Turkey and is rapidly developing. It is constantly accumulating books and resources, and our students have the opportunity to benefit from all these resources. As part of our goal to internationalize the university, we also offer a quota for foreign students every year. We want to accept international applications as well. Classroom teaching, or the field of our discipline, primarily refers to primary school education, and our main target audience is indeed the classroom teachers working in the field. Our goal is to attract classroom teachers working under the Ministry of Education or in private institutions to our discipline. However, today, classroom teachers also have the opportunity to work in different institutions, just like teachers in other disciplines. Especially for classroom teachers who are proficient in foreign languages and have developed their language skills, there is a demand for them in institutions such as Maarif Foundation, and they can actually serve as classroom teachers anywhere in the world. In this sense, our classroom teachers now have international opportunities as well.
In addition to practicing the teaching profession in the field, our graduates also have the opportunity to find employment by completing their doctoral studies in the field after their master's degrees, both in universities in Turkey and around the world, if they improve their language skills. They also have the opportunity to continue as academics. The most important advantage of our program is the young age of our faculty members. At the same time, our students have an average of three students per faculty member, which allows them to work closely with their professors. They have the opportunity to learn while working on projects. They have the opportunity to conduct projects for TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), the university's BAP (Scientific Research Projects) unit, and the projects unit of scientific research together with their professors. We attach great importance to this. The most important answer to the question of why students should apply to our program is our projects that highlight Medeniyet University. We wish all prospective students success in their exams. We welcome you all to Istanbul Medeniyet University Göztepe Campus.
