Department of Language and Speech Therapy

Hi, I’m Şevval Cengiz, I am a freshman at the Department of Language and Speech Therapy at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. The department started in the 2019-2020 educational year with us for the first time. We are studying in the Esenboğa campus. When we graduate, we get the title of Language and Speech Therapist. Language and Speech Therapy is the science which is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and intervention of communication and deglutition disorders. It is aimed to maximize the communication and speaking abilities of individuals with communication and deglutition disorders and to improve the quality of life of these individuals. Generally, courses such as Introduction to Language and Speech Therapy, General Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, and Embryology are given in addition to the ones such as Introduction to Basic Audiology Science, Health Law, Physics of Voice. The lessons of Anatomy and Physiology are given both as theoretical and practical courses. We can do our practical lessons in the labs by the help of models and cadavers. Besides this, we have the opportunities of doing experiments. Some of the fields that we can study are language disorders, voice disorders, articulation, and phonological disorders.
The language and speech therapists can work in academic positions in state hospitals, private hospitals, special education and rehabilitation centers. Besides this, they can also work in their own clinics. The reason for my choice of this department is the fact that it is a job much-needed in Turkey and its graduate number is few. It is also foreseen that language and speech therapy is a job with good employment prospects in the future. So, I chose this job. It is important for us to see various kinds of events. Ankrara Yıldırım Beyazıt University is located in Ankara where you can easily find this variety of events. So, I chose Ankara at first. Additionally, some other reasons for my choice are the active clubs, various courses, Erasmus facilities, and apprenticeship opportunities. I have always felt the support and interest of academicians from my first day of entry to Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. In addition, there are also many advantages of studying in a new campus. We can use the libraries, study rooms, meeting rooms, and sports fields whenever we wish. I advise the students who are going to make university choices to consider the employment prospects of the graduates of language and speech therapy department and the advantages of the Ankrara Yıldırım Beyazıt University.
