Department of Nursing

I graduated from Cumhuriyet University Department of Nursing in 1998. After working as a nurse at various hospitals for 2 years, I started my academic career in 2000 in Yozgat University School of Health Department of Nursing, which used to be an affiliate of Erciyes University. I joined Izmir Bakırçay University in July 2019, and ever since I have been working as the Head of Nursing Department. Our Department started taking its first students in the 2018-2019 academic year within the body of the Faculty of Health Sciences. We have a young and dynamic staff. We give our education with 11 faculty members and 4 research assistants. Our department is located in the main campus and is in contact with all the faculties and departments. We have also had graduate level programs at our department since last year. Curricula and course contents in our department are prepared in consideration of the global change, technology and innovations in the field of health in the world and in Turkey and education continues in this direction. Our courses start in the first year with theoretical courses based on fundamental sciences like Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology. We start our courses again in the same term in the first year with Fundamentals of Nursing and continue our main courses like Internal Diseases, Surgical Diseases, Education-Administration in Nursing, Gynaecology, Children's Health, Public Health and Psychiatry Nursing, and we continue our clinical practices along with theoretical courses. Approximately half of the education at our department is comprised of applied courses and we mostly carry out our applied courses at Çiğli Training and Research Hospital with which we have an agreement. We carry out our applications in the occupational skill laboratory and simulation laboratory that we created in our campus. Furthermore, we give the chance of studying English preparatory year to the students who prefer our department and rank in the first 5%; this way students are provided with the opportunity to communicate in a foreign language both in their academic and professional lives.
We have several laboratories in our department. One of them is the Occupational Skills Laboratory. Here our students will get the opportunity to apply all the occupational skills that they will use in the field of nursing using up-to-date technological models. Another one of our laboratories is the Anatomy Laboratory. Our students can improve their anatomy application skills on all the models equipped with anatomical models especially in fundamental sciences course. Another one of our laboratories is the Simulation Laboratory. We have established this laboratory this year and here our students will be able to expand their knowledge and skills by intervening complicated cases on up-to-date live simulations and models in accordance with the requirements. Later, having internalised the knowledge that they have gained here, they will get the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice with their professors in the research hospital of the university with which we have an agreement. Our department internships are carried out in our contractual hospital of the university, Çiğli Training and Research Hospital. This comprehensive hospital also has all the occupational clinics. Our students have the opportunity to do their internships here with our mentor nurses and expert professors in their fields. Our students complete the compulsory internships that they need to do within the education period of each course as well as the internships in the final year in this hospital. Moreover, they can complete their domain-specific internships like Public Health and Psychiatry Nursing with the workers of Atatürk Organised Industry Site and workers in Aliağa Industry site, which are close to our campus within the scope of public health. We also find application possibilities for special branch nursing such as Geriatrics Nursing, Diabetes Nursing and Haemodialysis Nursing by formulating protocols with special branch areas in our district.
Our university and department have been in talks with national and international projects and organisations. Some projects are in the process of development where the experiences that some of the faculty members at our department are utilised in this regard. Our students will be able to take part in these projects along with our faculty members if they choose to do so. Moreover, there are applications for utility models and patents by the faculty members at our department, which will continue in the future as well. Our students will also be given the chance to be a part of this process with the faculty member if they want to. After graduation, our students will be able to find employment in all institutions serving people, especially hospitals. They can work in specialised nursing areas such as Haemodialysis, Diabetes, Geriatrics, Occupational Health and Psychiatry, and also they can improve themselves in the academic field and pursue an academic career. Dear students; choosing our job is a significant part of our lives because if we are not happy with the job we have chosen, it will bring us unhappiness in our future lives. For that reason, the job of nursing which has existed since the earliest periods of history and the importance of which has been increasing, is understood to be an important part of human life. The reason behind it is that nursing is a job that is with a person from their time in the mother's womb till the end of their lives. In that regard, we believe that it will never lose its significance. Nurses play a part in the protection and enhancement of the health of individuals, families and societies, providing care during times of sickness and during times of rehabilitation, in other words in every aspect of life. Therefore, students who will choose this department should have strong background information and skills for application. We believe that our department will convey the education curriculum with course content that has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the modern day with our young and well-equipped staff in a way to develop applications in line with ethical standards and based on proof. So we are looking forward to greeting all the students who first of all love themselves, love people, love the nature and want to study and work in the field of health.
