Faculty of Art and Design

Hello, I am Professor Candan Dedelioğlu. I am the Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Yalova University. Before introducing our faculty, I would like to tell you a little about myself. I am a graduate of Marmara University. After obtaining my master's and doctorate degrees at Marmara University, and working there at the technical education faculty for 25 years, I transferred to Yalova University in 2015 and started working in the art and design faculty. I have been serving as dean since 2017. The Faculty of Art and Design was founded as art branches within the body of Yalova University on 7.11.2012 with the decision of the Council of Higher Education. Then, in 2015, we applied to YÖK and transformed these main art branches into departments. Currently, 2 departments are active. One of them is the Graphic Design Department. The Graphic Design Department started accepting students in the 2019-2020 academic year. The Department of Interior Architecture also started accepting students in the same year. We wanted our graphic design department to be a little different from other graphic design departments. For instance, in graphic design, we wanted to provide training on both the printed Media, which we call mass Media, and the digital media, which is currently in demand. We paid great attention to such divisions in our elective courses in order to enable our students to specialize in the fields they want. For this reason, we think that our students can be much more successful in their careers. The Department of Interior Architecture also integrates students much more actively into the courses and reinforces the workshops with projects and drawings in the respective fields. Apart from this, it is also a department that includes courses focusing on new trends that are based on environmental awareness. The Department of Interior Architecture offers a lot of workshop experience with the drawing workshops. Apart from this, it is a department that includes courses which focus on environmental and urban experiences. Although we currently have 2 active departments, there will be a third with the addition of the painting department which will start admitting students in the 2021-2022 academic year. In other words, 3 of our departments will be active and we have 5 Central classrooms that these 3 departments will actively use jointly. Apart from this, we have a printing laboratory, which can be used by the graphic design and painting department. We have a graphic workshop, a painting workshop, a drawing workshop, a basic pattern workshop and an extra computer laboratory. Apart from these, we have 3 more workshop spaces that we set up this year. These are: a computer lab, an interior architecture materials lab, and a painting workshop.
There is a mandatory internship in the Department of Interior Architecture in the 2nd and 3rd years during the summer periods. Students can find internship opportunities in interior architecture workshops, government offices and places working on landscape. We attach great importance to graduation projects where the students can utilize all the knowledge they have acquiered during their education, and we want students to develop their projects in an orderly fashion. We encourage our graduates to pursue a career in the fields of art, but they can also become teachers, by taking pedagogical formation. They can also work in any unit in government offices in areas suitable for them. The students who graduated from the graphic design department can work in agencies, media organizations, newspapers, printing houses and companies that make promotional products. Apart from that, they can work in government offices in areas related to this subject. Students who graduated from the department of interior architecture can also work in design offices in architectural offices, and our biggest goal here is to train students who can work in more specific fields such as shipyards. We specifically mention this and we provide guidance to students on such subjects. Yalova University Faculty of Art and Design is located in a province that is much closer to big cities. This is a great advantage. We think that many students will come here from the surrounding provinces. Apart from this, although we are a newly established faculty, we try to strengthen our academic staff with great professors. I think this is the biggest appeal for students to choose us. Apart from this, we have already made our name known in the surrounding provinces with some projects we have done together with the province of Yalova and NGOs. We are proud of this and it increases our communication with students. Our suggestion to candidates who consider our university and faculty that they should regard our location’s proximity to the big cities. Since we are very close to Istanbul, Bursa, Kocaeli and Adapazarı, they will have the opportunity to access the artistic activities in those cities. Apart from that, I think they are very lucky because our academic staff consists of instructors who have at least 20 years of experience, and our infrastructure is very strong. That's why we recommend students to choose us. I wish success to the candidates who will choose the Art and Design faculty of Yalova University.
