Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty
First of all, welcome. I'm Professor Fethi Güngor. I'm the dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. After completing a Doctorate in sociology, associate professorship and professorship, I started to teach in the field of social work. I was the director of the institute, the secretary general, the deputy dean, and now I'm the acting dean. Our faculty was founded on December 25, 2019. Our university is new, but our faculty is much newer. However, using all the dynamism of youth, we are developing and growing very quickly and we are about to reach the level of the faculties that have been opened before us in terms of the number of students, the department and the number of faculty members. Currently, 3 departments are actively operating in our faculty. However, we will open one more department and continue our education activities with 4 departments in the fall semester. The Department of Social Work was previously part of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. It was transferred to this faculty. Likewise, the Department of New Media and Communication was previously a department of the Faculty of Art Design. Now they are about to join us with its entire staff. We have opened the Departments of History and Psychology, which were not previously in our university, as two new departments of our Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. In the 2021-2022 academic year, we will apply to the Higher Education Council (YÖK) to open new departments such as Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology. For the 2021-2022 academic year, we started to build a laboratory for the newly established Department of Psychology. Our faculty students do internship and graduation projects in the last year. By making agreements with both public, private and voluntary organizations, we sign contracts and protocols to ensure that our students do internships in these institutions. In addition, some departments have 1 semester and some departments work with our students in 2 semesters on the graduation project. Thus, when they are thrown into the field, start their careers or want to continue their postgraduate studies, they can continue their journey as better equipped graduates.
All our students who have graduated from the 4 departments of our Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences can work in public institutions, especially ministries, private sector and non-governmental organizations. If a social worker doesn’t want to work in these sectors, they can open an office and provide family counseling. Of course, they would have to get an extra education for that. They will need a family counseling certificate. Likewise, our students who have graduated from the Department of Psychology can open their own offices and provide consultancy. As psychologists, they can work in the private sector. Or they can work in public institutions. Students who have graduated from the Department of History can work in educational institutions, research institutions or in the voluntary sector, especially within the institutions within the MEB (Ministry of National Education). There are great advantages in that regard. Because Yalova University is very close to Istanbul, they have a great advantage in accessing Ottoman archive documents. Our students should make the best of Yalova's geostrategic position, and of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Because it is a quiet city close to the big cities but away from the business and stampede of the big cities. Transportation can be easily done in 3 ways everywhere. They can easily commute to the big cities and carry out both research, internship and training activities easily. I think our university should be preferred because it is a young university and has a dynamic staff that has done doctoral studies both at home and abroad. In Yalova, where the blue meets the green and it is beautiful, we expect students to choose our university because it is a dynamic university where they can develop their skills quickly. I recommend students who will choose Yalova University and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to develop their language and communication skills. Because a graduate who will be involved with people and the society should be multilingual regardless of which department they graduate from. They should be able to use communication technologies with great command, especially new media tools, and also be able to develop communication strategies. I especially recommend that they focus on these two areas. Because if they have language and communication skills as well as the professional skills they will learn here for 4 years, they will have a great advantage in finding a job or continuing their postgraduate education. I wish success to the candidates who will choose our university and faculty.
