Faculty of Medicine
Hello, I am Professor Nurettin Cengiz, a faculty member at Bandirma Onyedi Eylul University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Histology and Embryology and also the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Our faculty was established on June 15, 2020. The faculty started accepting students in the same year, with a quota of 40. Our academic structure in the faculty consists of 3 departments. We have 3 departments, these are the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Internal Medicine, and the Department of Surgical Medical Sciences. However, our students graduate from a single program as general practitioners by taking courses from the departments in each of the 3 departments. In Basic Medical Sciences, there are courses such as Histology and Embryology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Medical Biology, Microbiology. In the Department of Internal Medicine, there courses such as Mental Health and Diseases, Child Psychiatry and Diseases, Chest Diseases, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Family Medicine, and Public Health. The departments within Surgical Medical Sciences are Urology, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Neurosurgery, and General Surgery. In addition to theoretical courses, our faculty also offers applied courses. Students perform practical applications in cadaver rooms and model rooms. Again in the Department of Histology and Embryology, in multidisciplinary laboratories, students have the opportunity to examine cells, tissues, and organs by using microscopes themselves. In courses such as physiology, they have the opportunity to measure some physiological events. Students have the opportunity to apply various practices in departments such as Biochemistry and Microbiology. In order to improve their professional skills during their education, they have to make use of vocational skill laboratories and simulation laboratories. These laboratories provide experience for students in their practical education, which is compulsory in medical education. We can categorize our education system in the Faculty of Medicine under 3 terms. Phase 1 education includes theoretical lectures and laboratory applications. Phase 2 education is a period in which internships are carried out intensively, and our students complete their education by doing internships for various periods in the departments of internal and surgical medical sciences. Students complete their internships by performing both theoretical lectures and bedside applications in the operating rooms. At the end of their internship, they are subjected to both theoretical and practical exams and successful students continue their academic education with their next internship. Apart from this, there are no other graduation assignments.
Our university is in cooperation with the International Relations Coordinator. Our initiatives continue to offer an alternative that will increase the ERASMUS mobility of our students. We take an approach that supports the ERASMUS project. I would also like to express that we are determined to continue our work day by day in order to increase its alternatives. Together with our Foreign Relations Coordinator, we provide all kinds of support to students regarding international mobility. Our university organizes about 30 national and international scientific meetings and congresses every year. In addition, our faculty members organize symposiums and congresses on different subjects in cooperation with various professional associations. All our academic staff and students can attend national and international congresses. I would like to state that we support our students in these national and international congresses. Naturally, the Faculty of Medicine is the luckiest group in our country in terms of employment. After graduation, students fulfill their compulsory service obligations determined by the Ministry of Health. After fulfilling their graduation obligations, students can continue their post-graduation education as well as have the opportunity to continue their careers in the public or private sector. The biggest difficulty students encounter first is terminology. They have to learn a new term in every other class. In order to overcome this problem, especially in the first and second grades, we support students by giving terminology classes and by constantly making various explanations on these terms. In order to attend, students work very hard. After coming here, they fall into the delusion that everything is over, and they encounter the situation of being unsuccessful quite often due to the fact that they become relieved and lazy. If you are studying medicine remember this, tomorrow is going to be harder. If you do not maintain your study schedule, you can't learn anything. Be careful about that. I wish success to all students who will take the university exam. We welcome everyone to Bandirma Onyedi Eylul University, Faculty of Medicine.
