Department of Social Studies Education

Hello, my name is Ümmühan ÇOTUR. I am currently in my final year at the Social Sciences Teaching Department of Balıkesir University Necatibey Faculty of Education.
The main objective of our department is to educate social sciences teacher candidates who can contribute to the Turkish national education objectives and uphold Atatürk's principles. During our first year, we take the courses determined by the Higher Education Council (YÖK), as well as subject-specific courses in social studies such as history, geography, citizenship, and political science. Additionally, we study learning psychology, developmental psychology, introduction to education, and teaching principles and methods to build our professional foundation. Our curriculum also includes general culture courses and elective courses.
As our focus is on theoretical education, we do not have laboratory sessions. In our fourth year, we undertake internships. During the first semester, we observe and familiarize ourselves with the school environment, while in the second semester, we actively engage in teaching, applying the theoretical knowledge acquired at the university.
Upon graduation, our fellow classmates who aspire to become teachers can work in secondary schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. However, there are also opportunities to work in private schools and educational centers, as well as pursue a master's degree.
I chose social sciences teaching as my dream profession from an early age, and my interest in history, geography, and social sciences led me to select this department. Balıkesir University Necatibey Faculty of Education is a well-established faculty with a long history, originally founded in 1910 as Karesi Dârü'l Muallîmini. The experienced teaching staff and faculty members were key factors in my decision to choose Necatibey Education Faculty. Not only did the faculty provide a supportive social environment and foster lasting friendships, but it also offered various certificate programs that allowed me to expand my knowledge in diverse fields.
The library resources available to us, which encompass a wide range of current and academic materials, proved invaluable during our final stages of study. Throughout my time at Necatibey Faculty of Education, I greatly benefited from the knowledge and expertise of the academic staff and faculty members. Additionally, I enhanced my professional skills through certificates obtained from seminars covering various subjects.
Following graduation, my goal is to serve as a social sciences teacher in secondary schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, while also considering further academic pursuits. I highly recommend this department to individuals who are passionate about the teaching profession, believe in their ability to excel in this field, and have a keen interest in social sciences.
