Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

Hi, I am Merve Gundogdu. I am a first year student in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Baskent University. My department was opened in the fall of 2016-2017. We are entering to this department with MF-3 score. My department is located in the main campus, which is Bağlıca Campus, in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. My department is concerned about a genetic investigation of living things, observation of them in a molecular level. We are concerned with the analysis of their genetics or DNA. We are interested in topics such as the evolution of living things, in which living space they lived. We are taking courses like biology and chemistry. In my department, the courses more like basic mathematics, chemistry and biology are taught. In later times, we will take courses such as microbiology, plant biology, molecular biology and genetics. In our department, we mostly instructed in biology and chemistry laboratories. However, we also use special laboratories such as microbiology. Especially in the Medical Faculty, there are fully equipped research laboratories. We use these laboratories when necessary. We have a compulsory summer internship and a graduation project so that we can graduate from the department. After completing these two, we are entitled to graduate. After graduating from department, we can work in IV laboratories, Molecular diagnostic laboratories, R&D (Research and Development) units, GMO diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, biology companies. Students who wish to study can pursue an academic career by continuing their graduate studies. Hi, I am Berfin Kochkaya. I am a first year student in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Baskent University. The reason that I chose this department: Since I was a child, I have always grown up with biology, and I have always been interested in living things and life around me. I chose this department to learn in more details and have more information. The first reason for my preference for Baskent University based on my department was that it has own hospital. Having the location in a big city like Ankara was another advantage for me. Therefore, I preferred Baskent University. Ten or more seminars take place once a week in one semester. Moreover, we are having seminars by specialists in their field about what we can do in the future after graduating from the department and these provide us to have knowledge in every branch. That gave me a great advantage. After graduation, I want to pursue my master’s degree, stay in university, and specialize in stem cells. At the same time, working with cancer is among my goals. According to our department, we have to know whether to question life and ask questions. You do not have to look straight at everything. If you think you can do this, I think it is a good idea to choose this department.
