Department of Industrial Engineering

Hello friends, my name is Bilge Kağan ÇAĞLAK. I am a 4th year student at Başkent University in the Department of Industrial Engineering. I would like to discuss with you a little bit about my department. The Department of Industrial Engineering is a department that accommodates many different disciplines. It mainly focuses on engineers who are actively involved in both the production and service sectors in order to optimize and improve different systems. In our first year, we take basic science courses in things like; Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. In our 2nd year, we take courses in Probability, Statistics, and Direction Action Research. In our 3rd year, we tend to take more vocational courses. In our last year, we take courses in Simulation, Production Planning and Control, Quality Control, and Facility Planning. Apart from these, we can take different elective courses. We take these elective courses to specialize in the areas of our choice. We can take courses in Decision Support Systems, Decision Analysis, and Project Management. In order to learn the common areas of industrial engineering in the business, we also take classes like Business Management and Economics. Our education lasts for 4 years. Within these 4 years, we are required to do two internships. One of them focuses on the production side of things and one of them focuses on management. The duration of each of these internships is 20 business days. By providing the right conditions and proposals to our professors, we can determine the place of where we would like to do our internships. Our school is every helpful in helping us find good internship opportunities. Even though we can do internships in places we want ourselves, our university is also very helpful in finding us an internship assignment. We have theoretical lessons that we take in our laboratories that include subjects like; Simulation, Optimization, Manufacturing Systems, Machine Tools, Business Research and Business Science. We also have laboratories where our basic science courses are held. Our university education lasts 4 years. In our graduating year, we must also complete a final project. Within the scope of these final projects, we work with companies that identify problems and then seek to find solutions to these problems. We learn to work on a team. We complete these projects under the leadership and direction of industrial consultants and experts. Since Industrial Engineering is a discipline that embraces many different aspects of many fields, the job opportunities are very broad for us. When industrial engineers graduate, they can find jobs in production, service, health, energy, and software industry where even computer engineers work.
