Communcation Design Department

Hi friends, I am Ali Sabri DİREN. I study at Department of Communication Design at Başkent University. The purpose of our department is to educate students who have the ability to design, present and produce effective messages by combining the use of technology and design. We take courses on communication and on the media and apart from these theoretical lessons we also have design lessons that fall on practice. Unlike in other universities, in our university we have a course program in which there is a technology combined with art and we learn them all together. In our department, courses such as image, sound processing, basic design processes and illustrations are also taught to us. Besides these, we also have compulsory courses like Economics and History of the Revolution. We have a special communication design workshop for our department . Apart from that, we possess laboratories where we have computers with all the programs installed for two kinds of designs. We can work in these laboratories whenever we want, and while we do our studies we can go to our workshops and have a consultation with relevant teachers. In brief, everything that we need for progressing in this area in our department exists at our university. To graduate, our school requires compulsory internships. The department arranges the places of internships. Aside from that we also have a chance to make an internship in Europe with "ERASMUS". Besides, in order for us to finish school we have different things to do apart from the above-mentioned. One of them is a graduation thesis. After receiving qualified grades from the graduation thesis, we are able to graduate from our school. After graduating from our department, we can find jobs in many fields as in communication, media and education in both public and private organizations. After graduation, we can move forward both on our own and in the academic field. Hello friends. I am Burchin Diren. I am a student of Visual Communication Design Department at Baskent University. At the same time I study Political Science and International Relations. I have been interested in graphics, paintings and arts since I was child, and I was making drawings a lot, that’s why I’ve chosen this department. So my life was continue like this, going to the courses of painting, was making drawings, doing this, doing that. And then I decided to turn it to my future profession. Honestly, I did it, because I was thinking, that I can’t do any other job. So before I made my university’s choice, I looked at the faculties of fine arts, departments of graphic design and visual communication design. I checked all information in the universities catalogs, what they tell, what they do and teach. Later I decided to study at the Design department Faculty of Communications. The reasons why I’ve chosen Başkent Üniversity and Design Department at Faculty of Communications are the same. Before I made my decision about university, I noticed at my researching, that at the faculties of fine arts generally just artistic and vocational training are giving. For me it was not enough. When you are studying at design department at faculty of communications in addition to design lessons you learn such kind of social sciences as sociology, economy and psychology. Moreover, my future job (it can be advertisement or design) will be nearly concerned in social sciences. Because of that I preferred to study at department of Faculty of Communications. In Ankara such kind of department is only at Başkent University. So it’s made my choice. We have computer labs here. Also we have production workshops, where we can work together with our teachers. For the matter of our academic stuff, I can say that I got a lot from them. We have really very professional teachers. And because our group was a small one (that's an advantage of private university), we had enough time for communications with our teachers. Since we had a small amount our teachers have a possibility to care about everyone from us. As a result, from all the opportunities which were given to us by university most of all I’m happy with our academic staff. My first goal after graduating is to become an academician. That's why I started a parallel studying. But when I was studying as a student, from my experience I can say this job is actually very enjoying. So with reference job sectors, if I work in a private company, I’m thinking of art direction. My recommendations for students who want to study at faculty of communications at design department of Başkent University will be like this. First of all, you really need to follow technology closely. And you really need to have a good command of a computer. Because everything what we do is a digital one and it requires the knowledge, abilities and advanced computer skills to use professional programs. So I can advise you to follow on them and think well. Secondly, as I said before, except our faculty there are not so many places which give art education. Somewhere vocational trainings are giving more, other places sectoral trainings are giving. So if you want to do a real job, in fact, if you say «Yes, I want to be an advertiser» or «Yes, I want to be a designer», come here. Because art and design are interrelated. Although they are very different things. Design is a discipline which edit of real world a bit. So, pay attention to this and come.
