Contemporary Greek Language and Literature

My name is Burcu Caymaz Bilgin. I have been working as a lecturer in the Department of Modern Greek Language and Literature since 2011. It started to accept students in the 2007-2008 academic year. There are 5 lecturers and 4 research assistants working in our department. In the first 2 years of our department, we offer courses that aim to improve the language skills of the students. These lessons are Grammar, Syntax, Speaking, Listening, and Comprehension. In the following years, we concentrate on translation and culture related courses. Projectors and computers can be used in our courses. There is one library belonging to our faculty. Our students can use this library to study and prepare their theses. Although we do not have a compulsory internship in our department, our students prepare graduation assignments. Our department offers Erasmus, Farabi and Mevlana exchange programs. Our university has agreements with the University of Athens, the University of Thessaloniki, and the University of Thessaly for student exchange programs. Students who meet these conditions can study at universities abroad for 1-2 semesters. Our graduates from this department can find jobs in the public and private sectors. In the public sector, they can work as translators in places such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Press and Information Directorate, TRT, and National Intelligence Organization. They can be licensed guides affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. They can work in translation offices. I recommend our students who will choose this department to study well, to take advantage of the Speaking and Listening classes as much as possible, to use the chance and environment in this nearby geography to practice and improve their Greek. Apart from gaining academic skills, our students can also develop themselves in social and cultural areas. Students studying in Edirne will be able to study in an environment where they can analyze the mutual cultural relations in Turkish and Balkan geography.
