Bulgarian Translation and Translation
I'm Serkan Cömertel. I am working as a research assistant at Trakya University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Translation and Interpretation in Bulgarian. My specialty is on Bulgarian grammar and I have several articles and a book in the field. The Department of Translation and Interpretation in Bulgarian started to accept students in the 2007-2008 academic year. Our department offers an education program for our students who want to study Bulgarian, while specializing in Bulgaria and the Balkans in general. The education period in the Department of Translation and Interpretation in Bulgarian is 5 years. It consists of 4 years of undergraduate education, 1 year of which is preparatory. In the 1st and 2nd grades, our students conduct intensive written translation practices. They improve themselves on Bulgarian morphology and Bulgarian phonetics. Starting from the 3rd grade, our students have applied interpreting courses. In addition to this, they are also trained in areas such as law, medicine and media translation, in terms of self-development and mastery of the terminology of these fields. Apart from this, our students have to take a second foreign language such as English, German, Russian for 8 semesters. There is a simultaneous translation laboratory in our department. In this laboratory, there are two double cabins and with a capacity of 50 people where our students both perform simultaneous translation practices and gain experience by helping each other. Apart from this, there is also a computer lab that our department uses. In this computer lab, our students also practice translation and gain a perspective on translation programs. There is no compulsory internship application in our department. However, we provide guidance to our students when they contact us with an internship request. Our students have to submit a graduation project in their final year. Here, they have the opportunity to apply the experience and knowledge they have gained for 4 years.
The students of our department can go to Bulgaria within the scope of the Erasmus program and continue their education and training at universities in Bulgaria. This can be done 1 or 2 semesters. In our department, students and lecturers coming from Bulgaria also attend courses for 1 week within the scope of the Erasmus program, and the future projects we will mutually develop are planned. In the Department of Translation and Interpretation in Bulgarian, many national events and programs take place during the academic year. English, German and Bulgarian Translation and Interpretation Departments participate in these programs jointly. In addition, by participating in the programs of well-known academicians and translators who are pioneers in their fields, our students are provided to meet these academicians and translators and benefit from their knowledge and experience. Our students who graduated from the Department of Translation and Interpretation in Bulgarian can work in translation offices, foreign trade companies, embassies, tourism sector, TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation), Turkish Armed Forces and various ministries. They can also take part in various projects of the European Union and continue their language assistant duties. In accordance with our program; Before coming here, our students should read various sources, articles and do research about Bulgaria, not only in terms of learning the Bulgarian language, but also in order to learn about the culture, history, literature and folkloric features of Bulgaria. Our students can also watch Bulgarian movies, listen to Bulgarian music, and follow Bulgarian newspapers and magazines using online resources. This will be the preliminary step in the development of their Bulgarian. Trakya University is a well-established university. The primary concern for students and their families is of course accommodation. There is no problem in the accommodation facilities offered by our university. If necessary, additional dormitories are built in different locations and the accommodation needs of the students are adequately met. Also, our students take part in university communities and meet people from different groups by socializing there, improving themselves in areas where they can discharge themselves and have fun outside the classroom. This is why we direct our students to these communities. There are also many communities and activities for our students at our university. It is one of the greatest privileges of our university, as a Balkan university, that students from the Balkan countries interact with students from various regions in Turkey and interact with each other in the field of language and culture. We welcome students who want to improve themselves in interdisciplinary studies and who want to continue their education and training activities by doing language and cultural studies related to Bulgarian, Bulgaria and the Balkans. I wish success to all students.
