Turkish Teaching

My name is Sümeyye Konuk. I started my academic career at Trakya University in 2011. I received my PhD from Marmara University in 2017. Since 2017, I have been actively teaching in our department. The Department of Turkish Education became operational in the 2008-2009 academic year. It had its first graduates in 2012. There are 6 staff members with at least a doctorate degree in our department. The strength of our department is that our staff have high communication skills with students. The courses given in our department are divided into three categories: Turkish education subject knowledge courses, general culture courses and vocational knowledge courses. Field knowledge courses are the ones that are predominant. Grammar lessons, lessons for teaching Turkish, lessons for basic language skills such as Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Ottoman literature lessons are among them. We have an internship course in the form of Teaching Practice 1 and Teaching Practice 2 for our 4th grade students in our department. It is a compulsory course. Our students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired for 3 years in a real secondary school environment. Students of our department can benefit from the Mevlana exchange program and Erasmus learning mobility and internship programs run by YÖK (Higher Education Council). However, in order to do this, the relevant programs must fulfill their obligations. We have a TESİAD (Federation of All Active Industrialists, Businessmen and Businesswomen) Turkish language teaching project specific to our department. This project is the Erasmus+ KA108 consortium project. It was established with the cooperation of Düzce, Sakarya, Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University and Yunus Emre Institute under the coordination of Trakya University. The aim of this project is to teach Turkish as a foreign language abroad. Students who meet the general Erasmus learning mobility standards can benefit from this project and gain teaching experience abroad. Our graduates can teach Turkish in public and private secondary schools. In addition, they can work in sectors such as state archives, TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) and press and broadcasting. In addition, they can be employed in Turkey and abroad for the purpose of teaching Turkish as a foreign language, provided that they have the necessary certificates and related graduate programs degrees. We can give 2 main recommendations to candidates who will prefer our department. The first is to aim to be a Turkish teacher with the awareness of transferring Turkish, which is our mother tongue, to future generations in the best way, and secondly, to be individuals who are suitable for the nature of the teaching profession, who research, criticize, question and are open to development. We are waiting for prospective students who want to contribute to our department. Edirne is known as a student-friendly city. Our university, which is integrated with the city, can offer students an active social life with sports facilities, social clubs and campus activities. In addition, students can work part-time within the university. For our low-income students, we have a project where we accept donations for their expenses. We welcome prospective students to our department to benefit from the opportunities of the university, the opportunities of the city and the activities of our department.
