Faculty of Medicine
Hello, I am Prof. Dr. Mahmut BAYKAN. As the founding dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University, established in June 2020, I started working in April 2021. Since I took office, we have been fortunate enough to have had a student within less than two years. We started with our first student, whom we sent to Sakarya University for education. Then, this year, we started our own first-year class, and currently we have a total of 75 students, with approximately 45 Turkish students and 35 foreign students. Our medical faculty serves these students. In a very short time, thanks to the full support of our rector and all our administrative colleagues and team, we have managed to up the quality in a short time. Our laboratories are almost ready, and we have already started educating our students without any problems. As I mentioned earlier, we started with our first-year medical students and are offering courses in basic science departments such as medical microbiology, medical biochemistry, pharmacology, histology, ethics, and history. In addition, with the support of our colleagues in the hospital, we also offer some clinical courses. We have approximately eight laboratories, including a student laboratory and four research laboratories serving our faculty members. The equipment in our laboratories, especially our medical equipment, consists of very new models, including some new special laboratory equipment that many universities and faculties cannot procure. Starting from the third semester, we send them to undertake internships at our Gelecek Education and Research Hospital, where they will receive training. However, since our students have not yet completed their third year, our internships have not yet started. Our medical faculty is very new, so after completing their third year, students take basic courses and courses in the basic sciences department, and then move on to the hospital to participate in visits, and have the opportunity to practice there. Hopefully, we will be able to start these internships in approximately a year. As the Medical Faculty, we encourage our students to conduct research and work outside, especially in foreign languages. Our instructors motivate and encourage our students to participate in projects such as ERASMUS. However, especially for students in the basic sciences department, students in the first, second, and third semesters are under intense pressure from the courses, so it is a bit difficult for them to participate in other international projects such as ERASMUS during these periods. However, we can also provide assistance to students who wish to participate. Although we have not yet entered into international organizations, we have already started various events such as national and international conferences and symposiums as soon as our faculty began providing education. We have conducted two effective international programs to date, one international congress and one international symposium, and we have also published them in book form. Books containing speeches by our speakers, including faculty members who have applied both domestically and internationally, have also been published. We have sent them in book form to various places. In addition to this, in our future work, we plan to participate in many face-to-face events through international associations. Hopefully, this will happen in the coming years. We also plan to participate in many scientific meetings such as congresses and symposiums face-to-face, especially in Europe and America, in various countries.
Our students, like all medical students throughout the country, are assigned as general practitioners by the Ministry of Health after graduating from medical schools. Meanwhile, students can also take the specialty exam while serving mandatory duty. Students who pass the specialty exam are also required to serve a certain period of mandatory duty by the Ministry of Health. Each specialist doctor who completes mandatory service can become an academician at universities and support our aspiring students. They can start working as a faculty member in medical faculties in their respective regions or desired universities, both in basic and clinical sciences. In addition, many of our colleagues who have become specialists in medicine and even those who have just completed their specialization can also apply for sub-specialization, and after completing this sub-specialization, they can continue their duties as a more qualified faculty member or physician in their field. Our students must prepare for two things: basic sciences and clinical sciences. New students, especially those who are getting used to the Latin-based medical language, may have some difficulty. The same language is used all over the world. But repetition is very important in medical education, and they can gradually get used to it. Especially in courses such as anatomy, pharmacology, microbiology, they may have some difficulty due to the abundance of foreign, Latin-based words. However, as I said before, our students can gradually get used to them as they repeat and get more familiar with them in their second and third years. Our medical faculty has the advantage of being one of the newest medical faculties; thanks to our rector and administrators, we found a ready-made closed area, and therefore, we quickly covered ground and started accepting our students in the second year. Despite being a very new faculty, we haven’t faced any difficulties in our procedures and requests because we have a lot of support behind us. Our laboratories and classrooms are nearly complete, and the advantage is that the equipment we have received consists of new, state-of-the-art equipment that cannot be found in other medical faculties. There is such an advantage. In addition, in terms of location, our university is located in a place with many green spaces. Therefore, we are sure that our students will choose our medical faculty because of the educational program, educational tools, and the expert colleagues in their fields who will accompany them in their education. They will be very satisfied, and also being close to large universities, especially in cities such as Bursa, Eskisehir, and Istanbul, can be another advantage for our students. We invite all our students to work together. I sincerely wish success to all students who will take the university exam. We are waiting for the students who pass the exams at Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University Faculty of Medicine.
