Biosystems Engineering
I am Murat Karaer, a faculty member in the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. Our department integrates engineering sciences with biology, environmental, and agricultural sciences. We began our academic activities in 2013 and enrolled our first students in 2018. Our postgraduate education commenced in 2022. Our department has three main disciplines: land and water resources, agricultural machinery systems, and agricultural structures. We have six academic staff, including two professors and four doctoral lecturers.
During the first year of the four-year biosystems engineering program, our students take basic courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and vocational courses. Beginning in the second year, they take vocational courses in land and water resources, agricultural machinery systems, agricultural energy systems, and agricultural structures. From the third year, they can choose courses according to their fields of specialization, particularly from the pool of elective courses. Additionally, our students can choose to participate in a one-year preparatory program.
Our department has one agricultural machinery test and research laboratory. In addition, our department utilizes the laboratories and soil-water analysis laboratories of our faculty in educational activities. We also have computer laboratories within the drawing and design package programs we use in our department. The Agricultural Application and Research Center, which has an area of 220 decares, is where our students and academic staff conduct application, research, and education activities.
In accordance with the internship regulations of our faculty, our students must complete a 30-day internship at the end of their sixth semester. Public institutions, the private sector, or our department may offer internship opportunities. One of our department's strongest aspects is our graduation projects. Our faculty members create projects in the fields that interest the students they supervise and present them to all faculty members at the end of the year. Moreover, we provide students with the opportunity to be coordinators in their own projects by participating in TUBITAK 2209 (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) student projects. This provides them with a significant advantage on their resume when they graduate.
Our department has bilateral agreements with European universities. Our students can pursue their education at various universities in the country or abroad by choosing one of the MEVLANA and FARABI programs in addition to ERASMUS. In 2022, our department hosted the Agricultural Mechanization and Energy Congress. Our students participated in the congress, which attracted a large number of attendees from the country.
Our graduates have the opportunity to work in public institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, municipalities, provincial special offices, State Hydraulic Works, universities, and some private and public banks. Furthermore, they can find employment in private sector contracting firms, agricultural machinery and tractor manufacturers, irrigation system design companies, and large agricultural enterprises.
Since our department emphasizes practice-based studies, our students need to improve their skills in the field. Additionally, I recommend that they learn English as a foreign language and design and drawing programs related to structures, machinery, and irrigation used by the industry. These skills will enhance their employability after graduation.
The campus is both far and close to the city. This location provides students with access to unique educational opportunities while being conveniently located near city amenities. Our university offers modern infrastructure such as classrooms, laboratories, and libraries, as well as a gym, football field, and cafes that enable students to engage in social activities.
To all prospective students, I wish you success on your university exams. We welcome everyone to Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University.
