Department of Civil Engineering
Greetings, I am Dr. Burak Gorgun, Deputy Head of the Civil Engineering Department at Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University's Engineering Faculty. The department of Civil Engineering is established with the purpose of serving society. The students in this program build homes to provide people with a peaceful place to live, construct roads and bridges to ensure transportation, and design dams to provide water and energy sources. The main objective of our students is to serve the people.
The Civil Engineering department offers courses in building materials, construction cost, hydraulics, geotechnical, and construction. The coursework covers topics such as strength courses, structural statics courses, fluid mechanics, and soil mechanics. We have a laboratory for each branch of Civil Engineering including one for building materials, geotechnical, hydraulic, and transportation. Our students have the opportunity to conduct various experiments in these labs.
Our department requires two mandatory internships, each consisting of 20 working days. One internship is focused on construction activities in buildings, while the other can be in the areas of highways, hydraulics, or geotechnical. Additionally, we have a 7+1 system that allows our students to visit construction sites or engage in building activities during one semester after completing seven semesters of coursework. They can examine construction activities and work in these sites, while also returning according to the agreement.
Our department participates in the Farabi, Mevlana, and ERASMUS programs. Every year, 6-7 students participate in ERASMUS programs and study abroad. Our department collaborates with the Chamber of Civil Engineers for national and international activities. Additionally, we partner with organizations such as TÜBİTAK to conduct projects, allowing our students to examine structures under dynamic effects and engage in activities related to their own departments.
Civil engineering is a vast field of study that encompasses various branches of science. Graduates can work in a range of different areas, depending on their chosen specialty. For instance, those who specialize in hydraulic engineering can find work in industries related to dams, water channels, water supply and organizational structures. Meanwhile, those who focus on highways can work for the General Directorate of Highways or other companies involved in road activities. Graduates from our program can also pursue careers in numerous building organizations.
While some of the basic courses in our program can be challenging, such as strength, building statics and basic construction, we provide model analysis and package programs to help students better understand the material. With these tools, students can visualize problems and gain a deeper understanding of how to solve them.
It's crucial for students to have a passion for civil engineering to succeed in this field. We encourage students to join clubs and organizations, such as Young IMO by the Chamber of Civil Engineers, to improve their skills and participate in national and international activities. By doing so, students can enhance their knowledge and contribute to their development.
Located near major cities such as Eskişehir, Bursa, and Sakarya, Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University is an excellent choice for students looking to experience different cultures and broaden their horizons. Our university is situated in Bilecik, where the Ottoman Empire was founded, offering students the opportunity to explore historical, cultural and sightseeing areas. We invite students to choose Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, to enhance their academic and personal growth.
