Department of Statistics
Greetings, I am Dr. Omer ALTINDAG, the Vice President of the Faculty of Science at Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University, and the Department of Statistics and Computer Science. Our department, which is one of the few statistics and computer science departments in Turkey, began its active educational journey during the 2020-2021 academic year. Presently, we have a total of 120 students spread across the first three classes. Our department is manned by four lecturers, including an associate professor, two doctoral lecturers, and one research assistant. Moreover, faculty members from other departments of our university provide additional support for the education of our department's students.
The statistics department can be described as a department that teaches programming and software developer skills, together with statistics, which is the basic science. Students who successfully complete their four-year undergraduate education in our department graduate with the title of statistician. They are data experts who specialize in data science. Statistics enables the analysis and understanding of data obtained in almost every field from engineering to economics, from social sciences to health sciences, and has a wide range of uses.
Our students who meet the necessary conditions have the opportunity to double major in the computer engineering department of the engineering faculty of our university. In addition, students who complete the pedagogical formation courses graduate as information technology teachers in addition to being statisticians. They can also pursue graduate education in engineering, business, and econometrics beyond their own fields.
During the first two years of our department, we offer basic mathematics, statistics, and programming courses to our students. In the third and fourth years, besides the compulsory courses, elective courses in mathematics, statistics, and software are also given. The basic mathematics courses consist of four semesters of analysis courses, differential equations, and topology courses, regression analysis, experimental design, multivariate statistics, and stochastic processes. For the field of computer science, we offer courses in software languages such as Visual Basic, C, Python, internet and web programming, data mining, and database management.
Students can access the detailed lesson plans and course content via the education information system of our university. We have fully equipped computer laboratories where the students of our department take programming and software courses. Although there is no compulsory internship or graduation project application in our department, our students can take a research project course where they can work on a specific subject in-depth.
