Mathematics

I am Professor Rahmet SAVAS, a lecturer and the head of the department. Our department specializes in analysis and the theory of functions. Since its establishment in 2011, our department has been dedicated to providing a comprehensive education in mathematics. In 2018-2019, we launched our undergraduate program, and we are proud to have witnessed our first graduates last year. Our goal is to train mathematicians who possess not only strong scientific skills but also social competencies, ready to make valuable contributions to various fields. Through academic research and publications, we aim to contribute to advancements in the basic sciences and foster technological breakthroughs in our country. Our department is actively involved in TÜBİTAK-supported projects, demonstrating our commitment to cutting-edge research. Additionally, we offer a master's program in applied mathematics and computational sciences, which includes thesis work. Starting from the fall semester of 2023, we plan to accept students for both mathematics and master's programs. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to equip students with the ability to adapt to the ever-changing world and excel in different areas of mathematics. Alongside the compulsory core courses in analysis, geometry, algebra, topology, and applied mathematics, our students have the freedom to choose elective courses from our department or other departments within our faculty, based on their interests. We also have agreements with computer engineering and civil engineering programs, allowing our students to pursue a minor in these fields. Our department boasts a well-equipped computer laboratory where we offer programming, statistics, and computer-based mathematics courses. In their final year, our students undertake a graduation project, presenting their findings to both their peers and faculty members. Exceptional students also have the opportunity to participate in TÜBİTAK projects as scholarship recipients, aligning with their individual competencies. International exchange programs play a crucial role in broadening our students' perspectives. We prioritize providing opportunities for our students to explore mathematics departments in different countries, enhance their foreign language skills, and enrich their cultural and social backgrounds. Through our ERASMUS agreements, we have established partnerships with four universities in Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and Germany. In fact, during the spring semester of 2022, one of our students completed their education at the University of Patras as part of the Erasmus program. As a department, we actively organize conferences and workshops to foster academic collaboration and professional development. Our university hosts international conferences on the latest developments in basic and applied mathematics, providing graduate students the chance to interact with esteemed academics from around the world. In the fall term of 2022, we held a harmonic analyst workshop with the participation of our esteemed faculty members. Furthermore, Istanbul Medeniyet University offers various organizations and activities that contribute to the social and professional development of the mathematics community. Our ultimate aim is to graduate students who possess strong mathematical thinking, possess knowledge applicable to various fields, have a thirst for lifelong learning, embrace interdisciplinary studies, are open to collaboration and innovation, conduct research at an international level, and uphold ethical values while serving the community. Our graduates have a wide range of career opportunities. They can pursue further studies in mathematics and their areas of interest, becoming researchers in universities and research institutions. They can also contribute to R&D units in government institutions, as well as various sectors such as insurance, banking, finance, and technology companies as software developers or in other roles that leverage their mathematical and software knowledge. Moreover, successful completion of teacher training enables our students to become mathematics educators. Mathematics, as a fundamental science, intersects with various disciplines, ranging from philosophy to economics and engineering.
