Nutrition and Dietetics

Greetings, I am Professor Fatma Esra GÜNEŞ, the head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Istanbul Medeniyet University. Our department began accepting students in the 2018-2019 academic year and witnessed its first graduation in 2022. Currently, we have 8 faculty members and 4 research assistants, all of whom are graduates in the field of nutrition and dietetics. Our courses are taught by competent instructors who possess expertise in their respective areas. The curriculum of our department is designed to provide comprehensive education in nutrition and dietetics. During the first and second years, students primarily focus on nutrition-related courses, while dietetic courses are introduced in the third and fourth years. Emphasis is placed on delivering lessons based on the latest scientific data, ensuring that students graduate with a conscious understanding and the ability to excel in their professional roles. Practical courses are integrated from the first year onward, alongside theoretical courses. Specifically, the nutrition principles course includes practical applications conducted in our well-equipped Nutrition and Dietetics Laboratory, which boasts an extensive range of resources. Additionally, food chemistry and basic chemistry courses are held in the chemistry laboratories of our university. Our fourth-year students complete their internships at the affiliated hospital of our university, receiving guidance and support from experienced dietitians working there. Faculty members and assistants also contribute to the internship program through teaching and supervision. As of 2023, our department is actively engaged in negotiations with various universities abroad to establish student exchange programs, including ERASMUS. Efforts are underway to establish connections and facilitate international collaborations. We strive to involve our students in TÜBİTAK projects as part of their graduation projects, allowing them to gain valuable knowledge and experience in the field. In addition to academic pursuits, we also organize social activities within our department. Our club, in particular, designs annual plans to foster a vibrant and engaging environment. Graduates from our department have diverse employment opportunities in the food and beverage sector, particularly within the healthcare industry, as well as in various educational institutions, both in the public and private sectors. They also have the option to establish their own practices.
At our department, we prioritize treating our students as if they were our own children. We strive to stand by them, offering support in both positive and challenging situations. We express our commitment to paving the way for their success, providing guidance, and offering continuous support whenever they need it.
