Hello, I am Professor Doctor Özgür AKTAŞ, Head of the Department of Bioengineering, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Istanbul Medeniyet University. Our department started undergraduate education as of 2018-2019 academic year. At the same time, we have master's and doctoral education. Many faculty members work in our department. Bioengineers develop biological processes using biology-based principles. And with these biological processes, they take part in the production of drugs, active ingredients, food products, proteins, purified enzymes, biomaterials, biomedical materials. In the first year, our students take basic courses such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, which constitute the basis of engineering education, as well as courses that constitute the foundations of bioengineering such as biology and introduction to bioengineering. In the second year, our students take some basic courses that are important for bioengineering such as stoichiometry, molecular biology and genetics, laboratory applications, thermodynamics, probability and statistics, biochemistry and microbiology. In the third year, our students take basic bioengineering courses such as separation and purification processes, heat and mass transfer, as well as various courses that are important in biotechnology according to their interests. These are specific courses such as bioinformatics systems biology, environmental biotechnology, applications in molecular biology and genetics, and medical genetics. In the fourth year, our students take design courses as well as technical and departmental elective courses that they did not take in the third year and make progress towards specialisation in the field of bioengineering. In the third year, our students take many courses that form the basis of bioengineering such as bioprocess engineering, reaction engineering, probability and statistics, separation and purification processes. In addition, both in the third and fourth year, our students choose courses from a large number of elective courses for their interests in biotechnology. In the fourth year, our students also take design courses, which are important in all engineering faculties. In addition to one student laboratory in our department, we have well-equipped research laboratories in our central laboratory dedicated to the bioengineering department. Since 2012, a serious research and development infrastructure has been established in our department with the work of our faculty members. Our students can also take part in these laboratories with TÜBİTAK 2209 A projects.
