Industrial Engineering

Hello friends, I am Mithat ZEYDAN, Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering at Istanbul Medeniyet University. I have been working in our department since 2021. One of the most important features that distinguishes industrial engineering from other branches of engineering is that it solves and produces solutions by addressing problems in enterprises with a human focus. Secondly, it works on the design of systems that produce the product. We can say that it is the only branch of engineering that sees the big picture. Our Industrial Engineering department started its activities in 2018 by taking its first students. In our department, we have highly experienced lecturers with both private sector experience and academic experience in terms of quality and quantity. In our department, together with our students, our lecturers produce qualified publications as well as projects. Since the industrial engineering perspective approaches problems by taking a system approach, each course taken primarily has a great importance. Because, our students use the methods, methodologies and methods of each course in the places and enterprises they go to. Generally speaking, courses such as quality control, orientation research, modelling and simulation, engineering economics are given in our department. The courses requiring the use of computers are taught in computer laboratories and physics courses are taught in physics laboratories. Our 2nd and 3rd year students do their production and management internships for twenty days each, totalling 40 working days. In addition, our 4th year students take their first steps into the profession after presenting their graduation studies in front of the jury as both individual and group work before graduation. Our department has signed a contract with international universities within the framework of Erasmus agreement. In this framework, our students who go abroad for one or two semesters increase their academic and at the same time social knowledge skills and manners. Although the field of industrial engineering is large, many different congresses and conferences are organised. First of all, Orientation Research and Industrial Engineering National Congress, which takes place every year under the research association, is one of the leading ones, but in addition, our faculty members participate in congresses and conferences in the field of international industrial engineering, computer sciences, intelligent systems every year.
After graduation, our students can work in almost every field, depending on the manufacturing and service sector in enterprises. As a department, we graduated in 2022. 80% of our graduates work in areas such as insurance, different areas of production, logistics, health, as well as R&D engineers, logistics experts and different fields. In addition, 13% of our students continue their postgraduate studies. Our students can overcome the difficulties they face within the framework of their own abilities and interests, but they can also overcome the difficulties they face provided that they get the necessary help by making meetings with our lecturers during office and interview hours. Our university is a young state university located in the centre of Istanbul, where our students can easily reach. In the Times Higher Education World Universities List ranking published in 2022, our university was among the 11 Turkish universities among the top 1000 universities. The intensive interaction between students and faculty members at our university, as well as having a central library with a capacity of 1 million books, and the scholarships given to our students by our rectorate and private institutions are among the important advantages for our students. In general, I recommend our universities not to learn by rote and by hearsay, but to understand what their profession is by researching and understanding what their profession is, to contribute to society, to provide added value, to work in the field where they can be productive, and to acquire a profession they love. I wish success to all our prospective students who will take the university exam.
