Program of Midwifery

Hello friends, I am Lecturer Tülay Yılmaz from Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery. I am also the Vice President of the Midwifery Department at Istanbul Cerrahpaşa University. Our midwifery department provides a 4-year education program. It has renewed its curriculum, updating it to European standards and the Midwifery National Core Education Program and continues to provide education this way. Midwives who graduated from our program can work in women's health, pediatric health, normal births, and can provide pregnancy and postpartum follow-ups. They can also work in the field of public health. In our program, courses such as Basic Medical Sciences, Physiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, pathology, sociology, and psychology are provided. The department courses consists of courses such as Pregnancy, Risky Pregnancy, Birth, Risky Birth, Child, Newborn and Public Health. In our midwifery department, laboratory studies are carried out along with our courses. We currently have two operating laboratories and four new laboratories in our department. In addition, our students in Basic Medical Sciences also benefit from the laboratories in Istanbul Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty while taking their courses. We conduct our department internships in Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, public institutions and organizations affiliated to the Ministry of Health, mostly in the delivery rooms of hospitals and family health centres.
Our students can benefit from the Erasmus program to study abroad. Apart from these, they can also benefit from the Mevlana and Farabi Exchange Programs. We have students who have benefited from Erasmus, went abroad and came back. With the Erasmus Program, our students can go abroad and also students can come to our university from abroad. Besides the students who benefit from the Erasmus program in our department, all of our professors have gone abroad thanks to the Erasmus program. The Second International and Sixth National Midwifery Student Congress, held by our department students and department teachers, was held within the Midwifery Department. In addition, in order to gather all the Midwifery Department students in Istanbul together, the First Istanbul Midwifery Days, were first organized under the leadership of our Midwifery Department and is currently active, commemorating the First Istanbul Midwifery Day. After our students graduate, they mostly work in maternity wards and public health units. In addition, they can work in hospitals, community health centres, as self-employed midwives, both in the field of postpartum and child health. Graduated students can complete the master's and doctorate programs we have established with Istanbul Cerrahpaşa University Graduate Education Institute and can pursue an academic career. Our students mostly have difficulties in basic medical sciences courses in the first grade. We help them to overcome the difficulties they face in these courses with laboratory studies. They are more successful in pregnancy, birth and child classes, which are field courses. I would like to tell the students who will choose Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Department of Midwifery, that they will be dealing with healthy individuals because they will work with mothers and babies, they will enjoy working more than other health departments, but they should also consider the difficulties of working in the hospital. Students who will come to Istanbul Cerrahpaşa University, Department of Midwifery will benefit from the opportunities provided, as our university is a research university. Since this part of our university is located in Hadımköy Campus, they can benefit from all the facilities of the campus and participate in social and cultural activities. In terms of accommodation, they can benefit from the dormitory facilities in our campus. Our department is the department with the most faculty members, in comparison to other departments. They will have the privilege of learning in a great department. I wish success to students who will choose Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery.
