Department of Maritime Transportation Management
Hello guys, I'm Lecturer Murat Yıldız. Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Maritime Transportation Management Engineering Department offers education in two ways. These are the deck or management options. Students who choose the deck receive captain training to work on ships. Management students on the other hand, will become business managers who will work in the office part of the ships and learn how to operate the ships. We provide laboratory training to our deck students who are trained to work on the ship, and we have more laboratories such as our communication simulator, which simulates the deck and communication devices which are used at sea, simulators where the loading and unloading of ships are shown and shipping laboratories. Our deck students are required to do an internship on board. During their 4-year education period, they spend 1 year on internships on open seas, on distant voyages. In addition, our manager students also have internships in ports and businesses. Our students can go to other universities in other countries thanks to Farabi, and students from other universities can come to our university. We have an agreement with Croatia within the scope of the Erasmus program. Our students go to Croatia and study as a part of the Erasmus program. Our school provides many benefits like these. As a department, we established the Maritime Education Council in 2016. As lecturers, we attend various conferences and events related to maritime activities. We have a very active Maritime Club. Our Maritime Club conducts activities every year and people who are experts in their sector visit our department and hold seminars. The main field area of our students is the maritime sector. Students who chose to focus on the managerial side of the business also can take a look at the logistics sector. The main study area of our deck students are ships, they work as captains on ships. First, they graduate with a license known as the fourth and third captain’s licence, which we call the long voyage licence, and then they get the second captain and ship captain licenses as they progress in the field in the following years. As I said, our managerial students can easily find jobs in ports, shipowner companies, ship operators, agencies in ports or logistics companies serving various land, air and sea transportation sectors.
Our program is a part of the Faculty of Engineering. Therefore, our students obtain basic engineering education very well in various courses such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Thermo Dynamics and Fluid Mechanics. For this reason, they may have some difficulty in basic engineering courses, but apart from that, we give theory courses, like navigation, loading, and operation. And on the other hand, our managerial students take the cost accounting and ship management courses without any difficulties. As they receive proper education, they can find work in very good places and face no problems concerning unemployment. Students who will choose the department should love seamanship because it is difficult to work on the ship, but also very enjoyable. You travel abroad by ships and get to know many countries and cultures. That's why it's a very enjoyable job. If you say you don’t want to work on a ship, we train you for the business option and offer you the opportunity to work as land personnel. The difference of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Maritime Transportation Management Engineering Department from other maritime schools is that the students coming to our department come to the Department of Maritime Transportation Management Engineering in the first year without choosing any option and they study in the first year jointly. At the end of the year, our students who want to work on the ship go on a sea internship for about 2 months during the summer vacation and if they really like the sea life, they choose our deck option and graduate from the department as captains, but if they say that they do not want to work on the ship or that the life on sea is not for them, we provide training to our students in the business option. They work in ship-owner companies whose ships need operated, logistics companies in ports, and ship agencies. Students enrolling in our department have alternatives. They can choose among the managerial or deck options and they have a year to decide. They can also consult us on this matter. I wish success to our friends who will come to Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa and choose our department.
