Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
Hello everyone, I am Nuray Beköz Üllen. I am working as a Lecturer in Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Engineering Faculty Metallurgical Materials Engineering Department. I completed my undergraduate, graduate and doctorate education in the same department. Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department started providing education in the 1991-1992 academic year. Since that year, it still is on the Avcılar Campus. We are currently providing education with 22 faculty members. Our staff consists of professors, associate professors, lecturers and research assistants. In general, basic courses are given in the first semester in our department. By the time the second-year passes, the students start to grasp engineering. In the third and fourth years, they start to become experts in their subjects by choosing courses in the fields they want to be experts in with the help of elective courses. We have a wide range of courses such as iron-steel, refractory glass, composite, bio-materials, magnetic materials, nano materials courses. Our departmental laboratories generally conduct studies on field of interests of our department lecturers. Of course, these laboratories operate to support our students in their future studies. Our students take laboratory courses related to the department in their third and fourth years. We have laboratories for Metholography, Casting, Pyrometorology, Hydromethorology, Nano Technology, Engineering Plastics, Powder Methology. There is a compulsory 45 workday long summer internship program in our department. Our students usually do their summer internship at the end of the second grade after getting to know their departments. Our students do not have any problems regarding internships. Because our department professors have connections with the industry and we support them throughout the process. They have the chance to apply for internships in Istanbul, around Turkey or abroad. Of course, students who are going to graduate have to complete their internships. Apart from that, we have a graduation project. In this project, our student can graduate by conducting an experimental project accompanied by an advisor. When our department students want to take advantage of the opportunities abroad, each department has an Erasmus representative and our students can benefit from these opportunities by contacting these representatives. Many national and international congresses and conferences are held in our department. In these congresses and conferences, our professors take part in both the scientific and advisory boards. They also work with students. Our students also take part in the studies carried out by the Chamber of Metallurgical and Materials Engineers in national or international platforms. After our students graduate, they can work in many places in the field of metallurgy and materials engineering. I can say that our students are very lucky in this regard. When it comes to metallurgy, you can include all the materials you can think of, metal science and materials. Therefore, they can find the opportunity to work in the iron and steel industry, refractory industry, glass industry, nanotechnology and advanced technology industries. While they can find a job in the private or public sector, our students can continue their studies by establishing their own private institutions. They can find jobs in research and development, product development enterprises, KOSGEB (Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Development and Support Administration) and TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey). Students who will choose Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Department must have an interest for research and development. Since Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Department is located in Avcılar Campus, you will not have any commute-related problems. We are lucky in terms of being close to the transportation infrastructure. There are many dormitories owned by the state or private institutions around our campus. Due to the size of the campus you can get away from the noise and chaos of the city. Dear friends, if you are wondering why glass is transparent, if you are wondering how a metal that we can be bend with our hands is used in the defence industry, and if you are curious about materials, we’d like to welcome you all to our department.
