Department of Chemistry
I graduated from the chemistry department. I received my PhD in 2009 from Istanbul University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Chemistry. I am still working as a lecturer in Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry Department. Our department is the first chemistry department of our country. It was established as the Chemistry Institute in 1917 by German professors brought from Germany in 1915 with the reform of the Istanbul “Darülfünun” between 1913-1915. In other words, it is the oldest and most established department in the field of chemistry in our country. There are 5 main disciplines in our department. These main branches of science are; Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. In addition to the basic courses and laboratories of these departments, there are many elective courses. A comprehensive education is provided to our students in this field. Our basic departments have competent laboratories loaded with highly equipped equipment. In these laboratories, research and development studies are carried out. Our students receive laboratory training in their basic courses and elective courses throughout their education. They can also work with us in research and development studies. Our students receive compulsory internship training starting from the second grade. However, we advise our students to complete their internships in the third grade, when taking their basic courses and laboratory trainings. Internship periods are 30 workdays in total. In addition, in order for our students to graduate, students must take the Graduation Project 1 and Graduation Project 2 courses in the fall and spring semesters of the senior year. In these graduation project courses, they can complete the program by completing either theoretical or lab trainings. Our students from the department can study at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, as we have an agreement with Poland as a part of the Erasmus program. Our bilateral agreements with this school continue. In 2019-2020, one of our students was sent to Wrocław University of Science and Technology in Poland. In 2003, the National Chemistry Congress was held in our department. In addition, international workshops are held regularly as a part of the AYPAK Projects of the Department of Analytical Chemistry. Our students who graduate from the Department of Chemistry have the opportunity to work in a wide variety of sectors. It is possible to work in departments such as quality control, quality assurance and production in pharmaceutical, food, textile, polymer and similar sectors. Our students may have difficulties understanding the basic courses such as the Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry courses. However, these difficulties are overcome because all our faculty members are in constant communication with our students so that our students can receive a better education. I’ve got a piece of advice for candidates who maybe will choose our department. They should look up our department. In our department, there are 65 lectures, including 22 professors and 19 associate professors. Thus, the chemistry department is one of the most competent in this regard in Turkey. At the same time, with the various research projects we are carrying out and the bilateral agreements we have made with the industrial branches, it is possible to provide our students with a fully equipped education with our instrumental analysis devices in our units. Thanks to all these benefits we provide, we are among the top choices of students. A student who graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa has the opportunity to easily find a job both in Istanbul and in the provinces surrounding Istanbul, thanks to the centrality of the city. Just the name of the university will provide a great advantage to our students in this sense. At the same time, the abundance of some social activities in our campus, the cafeterias and dormitories will create a suitable environment for the student to live. I wish success to my friends who will come to Istanbul University - Cerrahpaşa, Department of Chemistry.
